Does “originality” actually mean putting old ideas together in new ways,as the speaker asserts?Or is it just the meaning about thinking something that has been never thought before?I strongly disagree with the speaker, no matter what realm---social science, politics or natural science—it is in.Instead of choosing one from the above two candidates,I insist that originality is the combination of those two contents together.

At first blush the speaker’s assertation to some extent seems rationale.After all, putting old ideas together in new ways is always a kind of way leading people to pursue innovations . As our knowledge is developing at a blinding speed, a few scientist would deny to confess that their original achievements do with no relevance to the predecesors’contributions. For instance, the great physicist Issac Newton,though well developing the significant Laws of motion and universal gravitation, modestly said: “If I have been able to see further, it was only because I have stood on the shoulders of giants”.Just like Newton owing his success to the standing on the shoulder of the former giants, generally, many new inventions and ideas are the improvements on the basis of old objects and concepts. To strengthen this point, one need look no further than Watt, a British engineer and inventor who made fundamental improvements in the steam engine, resulting in the modern, high-pressure steam engine patented in 1769 which accelerated the process of the Industrial Revolution.

With respect to social sciences and arts,it seems to me that the inspiration of these greatest works can found ample bases of certain forms of prevail artistic accomplishments and elements.For example,Greek epic poet-the Illiad and the Odyseey,two of the greast works in Western literature,are generally not Homer’s own new ideas,but owe to his most gifted at perceivng and coordinating the talents and skills of others.Thus improvements, whether small or large, when gathering, are like the process in which the trickle become a stream and then the stream become a torrent, ultimately making the society to develop rapidly.

Although originality depends solely on the old ideas, it is not the mere reorganization of the old ideas in a new way, some completely new ideas coming out with no precursors are also defined as originality. To be more specific to this view,turn first consider to Einstein’s theory of relativity. After careful scrutiny and sophisticated illustration, Einstein extended Newton’s theory to high speed micro-object,on which many phenomena the old classical theory of Newton could not expain.Turn next example to the policy of “one country, two system”, due to the creative proposition by Deng Xiaoping, the great designer of China’s “open and reform” policy, Hong Kong smoothly return to the embrace of her motherland and the people of Hong Kong now still keep their original life style and enjoy more democratic rights.Such examples abound in history have prompted the human society to progress greatly. if there were no new ideas that was never thought before, the society might still look almost the same as it used to be and we wouldn’t enjoy such a modern civilization.

To sum up, originality is a very important factor affecting the progress of science,politics and arts. Thinking something no one have ever thought is as important as putting old ideas in new ways when defining originality. Both of them are the echo of creativity and both of them are the interpretation of originality.People who merely stressing the latter while ignoring the former fails to gain an all-around understanding about the content of originality.(581)

Thinking something no one have ever thought is as important as putting old ideas in new ways when defining originality. Both of them are the echo of creativity and both of them are the interpretation of originality.People who merely stressing the latter while ignoring the former fails to gain an all-around understanding about the content of originality.(581)
（这篇文章的例子很多，还有quotation，都不错， 不过说理缺乏了一点，不要扔几个例子在那就算完，不过还不错啦，我从来不敢写case by case的文章，不容易的说，呵呵）
