------正文------
I strongly agree with the claim of the speaker that scandals can be useful for focusing our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could-whether in politics, academia, or other areas.
First of all, people tend to be more curious about the scandals than preach given by the speakers or reformers. Scandals, as some real stories, would be so vivid that they can give people a profound impression about what is bad behavior in our society. Also, as an old proverb says, actions speak louder than words. Since scandals are what had happened around us and people would be somewhat interesting for the private affairs about other people, so many mass media would like to use scandals to call the attention to the people they would derogate. In modern times, scandals, as a strong tool, could destroy one person immediately no matter what contribution he had ever done to our society.
Furthermore, scandals use negative examples to call our attention on the existing problems or phenomenon in the society as well as in many specific fields. For example, the media reveals the scandal of Water Gate. Nixon, the former president of United States, abused his power to seek his own benefit. Through these scandals in political realm, we would find out a lot of problems, such as corruption or misuse of authority of some leaders. In the economic realm, scandals could also reveal the problems hided in the company. For example, the President of Chang Hong Group in China peculated the public money for his own use. When his bad conduction was disclosed in the newspaper and other media, many of us would have a thought about the problems in the management of a company. In the academic realm, some professors plagiarize the theses from other ones or from their own students. Their behavior would motivate us to think about that we may lack of the creativity in the study or the research environment would be so bad that those professors could not produce any fruits by their own effort.
Whereas, we should look on the scandals in a calm and fair way, in other words, we should make a difference between the contribution and the mistake of a person. Even if some one commits a mistake, we should use an objective criterion to evaluate him/her. The feat should be acknowledged and the scandals should be disclosed. Besides, the more important work we should do is not only to excavate and criticize the scandals but also to avoid committing similar mistakes. Otherwise, scandals would lose their real functions and become just stories prevailing in the streets.
In sum, scandals, as a mirror of the society, could help us pay attention to some problems hidden in many fields and motivate our thinking of the development of society. However, we should utilize this tool carefully and effectively. |
