Can outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study play a vital role in the course of its development? The speaker claims so. However, in my point of view, it goes too extreme. I acknowledge that outsiders play a considerable role in finding novel methods or approaches to reach the solutions, yet it is still possible for scientists bring significant progress to their own field.

To begin with, with different thoughts and methods, outsiders' ideas are not limited by traditional rules of that field. Sometimes, their ideas may seem preposterous to scientists within that field, yet this is the key point of their functions. For example, actresses are outsiders of engineering field, yet an actress had invented the prototype of today's wireless communication during the Second World War. She got her ideas from music tones with different frequencies, and proposed a wireless communication way which called frequency-hop today by dividing frequency into several equal parts and transmitting every bit using high band or low band of different parts. While at the same time, scientists within that field were still trying the time division methods to reduce the possible of information detected and deciphered by their enemies during the transmission. Her idea brought us the new technology CDMA today. Therefore, because outsiders are not restricted by the conventions within that field, it is possible for them to get ideas from their own fields to that field which may lead to new discoveries.

In addition, outsiders can bring basic tools to help scientists of that field go smoothly in their researches and get correct results. For a supporting example we need to look no further than mathematicians. Scientists of nature science and engineering fields often use mathematics as a fundamental tool in their researches. It has been reported recently that the tenth planet in the solar system is discovered and its position has been determined. While astronomers are able to see it from telescopes, they have to ask the help of mathematics to calculate its exact position. As far as I can see, it is possible for astronomers to predict the exact position of the eleventh planet in the solar system if mathematicians can find out the certain rules of the positions of planets and use telescopes to observe and verify whether it exists. Thus, outsiders sometimes provide fundamental knowledge to reduce the number of obstacles.

Admittedly, it is possible for scientists within that field to make important contributions to the development of their fields. Indeed, a lot of physicians today are also chemists, and philosophers are also writers. The discovery of radium and polonium, which won the Nobel Prize in 1911, was made by Marie Curie, a famous physicians and also chemists. She used the knowledge of radiation to find the existence of radium and polonium, and applied chemical knowledge while separating them from the other elements. Therefore, as scientists today are equipped with knowledge of different fields, it is possible for them to use their own knowledge to solve the problems instead of calling scientists of other fields to help.

In sum, while outsiders are able to bring new thoughts and methods to the field of study and even lead noticeable improvement, it is still possible for scientists today to build milestone within their fields. Scientists should cooperate together to create a good environment for the development of the whole society.

我上课可以听到一些英文的例子,不过这种例子大多是engineering background,像我上面举CDMA就是某个prof开玩笑的产物,还开了wikipedia的网页,所以印象很深刻.
还有一个例子是前一阵子看报纸所得啦.
其实我个人觉得没什么必要大张旗鼓地收集素材的,平时的新闻就差不多了.前一阵子死的那个美国男主播的生平里有蛮多东西可以挖.
用来用去也就这么几个例子了,只是看你怎么用了.
