The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
------正文------
There is an on-going debate over whether the descendents or the contemporaries decide the greatness of individuals. Some people may claim that the greatness of individuals would be decided by those who live after them; while others insist that it can be decided by coeval people. In my view, both descendents and contemporaries can decide the greatness of individuals, but it depends on cases.

To begin with, to illustrate that the greatness of individuals can be decided by their decedents, we can see the scientific field. Many of the great scientists lived in a hard life but today are reviewed as great men. One apt illustration of this point involves Bruno. He lived in a time that people thought that the earth is the center of the cosmic, so when he claimed the heliocentric theory, his contemporaries deprecated him and executed him to death. But now we know that the heliocentric theory is correct, so we esteem him and define him as one of the great individuals.

In addition, in the artistic field, the great people are often revered by their decedents but not by their contemporaries. Not all the great people can be accepted by their contemporaries. It depends on the kind of his works and the opportunities. In order to see this point clearly, let us see an example about Van Gogh. Van Gogh lived in a miserable life, but he did not disappointed about life and insisted in painting. Today, Van Gogh is one of the greatest painters in history and his works are valued so much. Imagine that Van Gogh had a closed friend who appreciated his works so much and this man was a famous person in their time. Maybe Van Gogh would be considered as one of the great men by their contemporaries.

Finally, on the other hand, there are some great people that are decided by their contemporaries. Common sense tells us that if one's inventions or his works can improve our life much or correct the views that are hold for a long time, he will be considered as a great person. Take Einstein as an example. His gravity theory changed our concepts about time and space that have existed for thousands of years. Einstein is considered to be one of the greatest men in his time-twentieth century. We can see another case of Bill Gates. The development of computer has changed our life dramatically. Now almost all field's research and development are using computer to manage, compute, model, simulate and so on. And our daily life is also changed by the computer. Using Internet, we can utilize computer to chat, to shopping, and to play games. Because of these and other contributions, Bill Gates is thought to be a great person in our time.

In conclusion, there is no easy solution to such a complex issue. However, due to the reasons mentioned above, we could draw a safe conclusion that the greatness of individual can be decided not only by their decedents, but also can be decided by their contemporaries. It depends on cases.

The author claims that if you want to understand a society’s ideas and values, you can observe the appearance and behavior of its people. Because the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. However, I do not think the view is right.

First, it is no wise that (not wise to)observe people’s attitudes and interests from their dress and action. Usually, people decide what they should wear about the place where they reach. They wear T-shirts and jeans to go shopping, wear sports wears to run and play games, (and) wear business suits to join party and go to work. Whether a person likes his/her job or not, he/she should wear work clothes. So, it is difficulty to judge a person’s attitude from dress. The clothes do not reflect what the people interest in, too. Most people like wear sport wears. However, it does not mean all of them like sport very much. In fact, sport wears are comfortable (to wear去掉), and sometimes, they are cheaper than other clothes. Another example is Albert Einstein. Einstein does not care his dress. He often wears a black coat, and does not wear socks and tie. He has a long hair and does not bedeck it. Nevertheless, it can not prove that he is not a famous scientist, and does not interest in physical.
在两个分论点之间可以用点连词,显得层次分明一些。

Second, people, who are in different generation, have different attitude about(toward) dress. Only through observing the way of people’s dress and act, drawing some conclusions is not reasonable. In China, the old(elder person) like dress comfortable wears and do not care about fashion. The young like match fashion, and wear individual. Some students like sexy clothes. They like make up themselves as special girls. However, it does not mean China is an open country. In fact, most Chinese are conservative and shy.
可以多变化点动词,不要一直用like
Last but not least, Society has a great many paths to express its ideas and values, such as education, art, music, media, law and etc. Children are a country’s future and hope. When they go to school, they would learn what they should do or not, what is their duty, and so on. The books which are used in school are written by famous educators. And the educators have plenty of experiences about explaining the society’s values and ideas to children. Law is a measure about people’s action. It decides what can do or not. It is refer to society’s soul and government’s wish. Media is an important tool of government. Everything that wants to claim in media should get government’s permission. Media makes teleplay, music, and movie with the society’s core. And then, people can learn it from media without any difficulty.

In sum, people’s action, dress and appearance can not give right answer about society’s ideas and values. If a person wants to research the society’s soul, he/she should observe all sides about society, such as history, culture, media, laws and so on.
总体来说还是可以的,就是用词尽量丰富一点,语句之间注意衔接。
