The speaker asserts that lasting value of society is created by the artist, not the critic. However, I could not totally agree with the speaker and would contend that not only the artist but also the critic gives society something of lasting value.
  To begin with, the artist explores in himself or herself to create works some of which would become lasting value of society. According to what Freud has said art is kind of release of individual lust, converting the human libido into plentiful creativity. Artists express their emotions, passions, desires through the work of art. For example, Da Vinci’s famous work Mona Lisa expresses gives us a picture of the most beautiful woman in the world. Mark Twain’s literate works describe the real life of America in 1920s, which help us better understand the history of America. Chinese author Su Tzu’s book “the art of war” gives military commend and even business leaders ample information about how to operate effectively and efficiently.
  In addition, the critic plays a crucial role helping the artist gives society something of lasting value, too. The Critic helps us understand and interpret the work of the artist. A critic who is familiar with a particular artist and his or her works might have certain insights about those works that the laymen would not. Without the critic, most people could not know the expressions presented in “potato eater”, one of the famous works of art of Van Gogh. Without the critic, many of us could not understand the purpose of Mark Twain’s literate works and how important these works are in American literate history. Without the critic, we can not distinguish the great art of work from the common one.
However, there is some disadvantage of the critic. As we know the artist is likely to create new ideas and values, which will have a conflict with conventional ones, meanwhile, some critics, especially the ones controlled by politicians to hold their govern, would refer to later ones and cast some unjust critique on the artists, which harm the development of them. Moreover, some critics judge the work of art inaccurate and misleading common people, firstly due to their ability and knowledge of understand the work of the art, and secondly, I suppose, may due to their personal interests, which make them wear pairs of colorful glasses when they judge.
To sum up, lasting value is created not simply by the artist but the critic also plays a vital part in that. The importance of critic should not be overlooked and we common people should have an critical eyes when we see the judgment of the critic.
