Argument 65
WORD: 540 MINUTES:1:20:18
In this memo, the president of a chain of cheese stores claims that all of his stores should discontinue stocking a multitude of his varieties of imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. The president provides many evidence to prove his conclusiong:1)the five best-selling cheeses at his newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin; 2)a recent survey by Cheese of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers; 3)stocking more domestic cheeses could be the best way to improve profits. I find that the argument for discontinuing stocking imported cheeses and placing more emphasize on domestic cheese seems logical.
To begin with, one example is rarely sufficient to establish a general conclusion. It is obvious that the five best-selling in the newest store were all domestic cheeses which does not mean that all the residents in the United States tend to choose domestic cheeses. In the meantime, other stores of this chain of cheese stores may indicate that the imported cheeses attract more attention from the citizens in other regions of America. Unless it can be shown that the condition of the five best-selling in the newest store is representative of the sales of all cheese stores, the conclusion is completely warranted.
Another problem about this argument is that the subscribers of Cheese of the World magazine may prefer to buy domestic cheeses rather than many of imported cheeses. Therefore, the validity of the survey is doubtful. For example, the adjacent states of the surveyed subscribers live in, many citizens are eager to buy a plenty of imported cheeses instead of domestic cheeses, and particularly the cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. If the people are only limited to a certain publishes who subscriber its magazines, the results of the survey will be unconvincing.
What’ more, the president fails to establish a causal relationship between the profits and limited inventory. There is no doubt that all of his stores which discontinue stocking imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses may increase expense by increasing inventory and has directly influence on profits. Similarly, the president does not provide any incredible evidence to prove that concentrating on domestic cheese could be the best way to improve profits. Given that the novelty of imported cheeses may bring more innovations and furthermore exploit more market than domestic cheeses.
The gravest problem about this argument is that for many years, all the stores have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses and there is no indications shown that the sales of domestic cheeses were higher than that of imported cheeses. As a consequence, last year, the static, which is shown that residents prefer to buy domestic cheeses, can not regarded as a reason that the chain of cheese stores should discontinue stocking many of imported cheeses.
In sum, the president’s conclusion that all the stores should discontinue stocking imported cheese and pay more attention to stock domestic cheeses is easily arguable. If the samples surveyed and the comparison have been proved with more incredible data and evidence, hence, the best way to improve profits in all of president’s stores which could be proved reasonable is to discontinue stocking imported cheeses and concentrate on domestic cheeses.
