TPO1:At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support
There is no doubt that classes and libraries should be cornerstones for universities and colleges. I believe, however, sports and social activities also deserve financial support being equivalent to that for academic tasks.
Students should be humans of flesh and blood at first. As Emerson said and I quote, “the first wealth is health”, a sound body is a basic requirement for our human-beings to pursuit happiness. And Sports activities are conductive to good health. Adequate financial support to sports will ensure students access to ideal equipment and facilities, such as swimming pools and gyms. Engaging in sports regularly will not only improve students’ physical condition but also bring them piss and vinegar, and even the sense of teamwork. All of them will further contribute to students’ life quality as well as academic performance.
Then, students are members of our society, and will be the pillars of our future world. Students can hardly learn everything merely from classes and textbooks. Granted it is possible, as we know that genuine knowledge comes from practice, students should apply what they learned to real life. So the university cannot only impart information, but should also provide students a stage for practice. Moreover, participating in social activities in universities and colleges which is a kind of preparation for students to step into a brand new world without the safeguard of our campus and our families, can helps students build up their own social network. Sufficient financial support would help the clubs or societies in universities to provide students more challenging programs, ideal internship opportunities and fancy life clubs.
There is a famous theory in Economic, “the law of diminishing returns”, which states that as we increase one input and hold other inputs constant, the product of spending each unit resource will decline after certain point. This theory also works with respect to financial support in academic tasks, sports and social activities. Maybe it is arbitrary to assert universities and colleges should invest equivalent money to academic tasks and extracurricular activities. Nevertheless, we do have to strike a balance between them.
