When it comes to the relationship between personal contribution to the society and individual interests, I concede that scholars and researchers have the freedom to do what they love and curiosity is the best teacher in research. At the same time, however, we cannot deny that some scientists are enthusiastic about something dangerous or harmful to the society. In addition, people deserve to make contributions for their status.
Scholars and researchers are never forced to make contributions to the society and they have the freedom to choose whether pursuing their individual interests. Though pursuing interests, it’s not necessarily mean making no contributions. As we know, many scientists in history made significant contribution to society simply by pursuing individual interests. Furthermore, to some extent, curiosity is the best teacher in research, especially facing explosive development of science and technology in nowadays. Without interests, people would hardly have promotions to conduct researches. For instance, bored with the repeated and endless work in a bio-lab, people with no interests would just act like a computer system circulating the program again and again until they get a satisfying outcome. While for those who are curious, they would attempt different circumstances with little dose for one time. If succeeding, they would increase the dose of the certain one and continue the work; if not, they would abandon it quickly. In many fields, it is interests that bind individuals together and hence lead to ideas' crashing, which would emit flames of new thought. On the other hand, sometimes it is hard to evaluate the direct social significance of some theoretical research for we can't see its effects immediately. In short, pursuing individual interests not only fulfill personal interests, but also lead to some significant contribution to the society sometimes.
While the advantages of pursuing interests could be easily seen, we couldn't ignore its disadvantages, which may be larger in some fields. As we often see from some science fiction films about justice fighting against evils, say The Hulk, Resident Evil, XX and so forth, it's mostly one powerful liquid medicine that makes people invincible, thus makes trouble to the whole earth. If casting back to the person who made the medicine, it must be a clever and curious scientist. Obviously, we can't allow scientists to conduct harmful or dangerous researches in fulfilling their own unusual or idiosyncratic interests. After all, there exists an upper limitation in human's society for the technology is still immature. According to this concern, some may ask "after all, such negative teaching materials of scientists are the minority, do we need to take it so seriously?" My answer is, “Yes, this is just the largest but not most frequent concern”. When taking the term "more important" into account, as for the scholars and researchers, they should balance their interests with responsibility deliberately. Only acquiring acknowledgement from the society, they have the honor to be called scholars or researchers. In any case, working is more important than individual interests.
Perfect scholars or researchers are those who can always devote themselves in works to make contributions to the society, and meanwhile don't abandon what they pursue. It is what they pursue with interests that gives them inspiration and promotion. Such people would likely to succeed more quickly and happily than others. But they should also take the security of their individual interests into account. Just like the example about crazy scientists I mentioned before, though having curiosity, the scholars and researchers should bear in mind that anything harmful to the society is forbidden.
In summary, without curiosity on the researches, scholars and researchers lack the inspiration and promotion on their work. Without contribution to the society, they don’t deserve their status and what they are interested in may have threatens to the society. Thus, personal contribution to the society and individual interests are both important. If I have to give a comment, I think social responsibility should be always at the first place. |
