51"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
I admit that an individual oriented education will be very effective in exploring individual talents and thus bringing forward unexpected creations to society. Nevertheless, the purpose of education lies in not just meeting needs and interests of students, but also in passing down values and knowledge respected by communities, and in helping students develop eligible citizenship and personal skills necessary to survive in this world.
Admittedly, education will be more effective and fruitful if individual needs and interests become the focus of education. To some extent, it can be said that in almost every field, today’s tremendous developments owe much to the contributions of the few geniuses in the history of human being, Galileo,Newton, Einstein, Edison, etc, who are luckily the ones that have combine their interests with work. Loving what you do is definitely more powerful in achieving success than all the hard work in this world. The labor that looks tedious and boring to other people may seem instead interesting, and they can actually enjoy the process of working, with involuntarily intense attention tackling with difficult problems. Everyone is born unique with some specific talent and interests. If more such talent can be explored and developed, it’ll be unimaginable what our world will be look like. A well known fact is that the important roles education plays in cognitive growth and self-interest discovery for individual during its growing period. If education is designed specifically to meet individual needs and interests of each student, they will study happily at school, form the good habit of thinking their own ways and exploring their own interests. More importantly, this thinking habit will exert a life-longinfluence and make achievements in their own field more easily.
Despite the optimistic vision of individual oriented education, there are some other aspects we should consider about this new pedagogy strategy. Thefirst thing is the feasibility of such a system in present situation. Since people’s interests and needs can be very wide, it would be impossible to arrange enough teachers capable of tutoring such diversified needs and talents. There can be as many the number of students as the amount of interests, and it’ll be difficult to find sufficient adequate faculties. The second thing is aboutthe kindred of individual needs and interests, some of which worth systematicguidance and exploration, relating with individual’s inner personality orcharacter, some of which are just transient, casually, influenced by the tendencyin contemporary world, like a girl may suddenly get interest in shooting justbecause the heroine in James Bond is so handsome with a gun. That kind ofinterest doesn’t worth further study since it may disappear before long.
Lending more credence to my position is the fact that there’s more in thepurpose of education than just help students discover their own interests andneeds in order to expect them make intellectual contribution to society.
Commanding the knowledge and wisdomaccumulated through human history for the young generation can guarantee thesteadfast advancement of human civilization, which is also a necessaryfoundation for students to make further achievements later in life. Systematic scientific subjects learning in physics, mathematics, biology, human historycan effectively equip students with invaluable widest, deepest knowledge infastest ways. Moreover, through history and humanity study, communities canpass down values and wisdoms considered as worthwhile to their own, to enhancecommunity identification and culture development.
In sum, a compromising method between the impracticality of education specially designed to meet the needs and interests of students and uniformeducation, is to encourage students to think in their own ways and to seektheir own interests themselves, to provide a learning environment advocatingactive and open thinking, but based on a uniform education contents. In sum,the truly effective and applicable education will center on delivering fundamentalknowledge and encourage individual to develop their own interests, since itwould be difficult to carry out if education is specially designed to meetindividual demands.
