To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one muststudy its major cities.

I must say i reject the statement.while it is true that major cities play an important role in a country,that does not mean they stands for it or are even necessary since most people live in relatively small cities and countryside.
Of course,there is no denying the fact that major cities are diverse.It is human nature to attempt to pursue the most comfortable life which major cities are most likely to offer:career success,big money,wonderful living conditions,etc.As a consequence,people from all over the country choose to go to those big cities to realize their dream.Besides,because they are developed,citizens have no need worrying about such things as jobs,meals-basic living demands for human.Fashion is often what they care about.As is known to us all,stars usually just go to major cities to perform.
However,as the old saying goes,Keep good men company and you shall be of the number.Although cities are more diverse,we have to admit people have been being assimilated when they move from one place to another,their habits,behaviors,even minds change as time goes on.This phenomenon is especially obvious in china.in Spring festival,the most important festival in china,most people come back home to visit their family members.According to the CCTV reports,when journalists ask people from street that what has made them most uncomfortable while living at home,surprisingly almost everyone mentioned the bathroom more or less,because the bathroom between cities and countryside are very different.when in Rome,do as the Romans do.This trivial thing illustrates us that people can not fully stand for their hometown as they are becoming increasingly like the citizens with whom they live.
Besides,even though major cities represent fashion,that doesn’t mean fashion is the most vital,even vital to people in a country.it would be ridiculous to say that by studying New York city and LA,we can have an outline of the US.Shanghai,the economic center of China,is rich in jobs,money,and opportunities to get them.however,more than half of Chinese people live in the countryside,In fact,many people are still living below the poverty line.for them,eating is a already big problem,not to mention fashion or other things.It just makes nonsense to say that researching a few people of the country is more essential to study a country’s characteristics than the majority of it.
Finally,a country’s characteristic are not only related to modern development,but its history as well.To understand a country,one must learn its culture.Fashion is something that’s easy come,easy go.Just looking at how many popular things growing up with us,songs,cloth,for example,still exist?The culture is immortal which makes different countries different characteristics.Why a Chinese behave differently to the same thing from a Japanese,or an American?why things that are seemed normal in Europe become incredible in Iraq?All of this is cultural difference.Usually big cities are famous for their geographical advantage,rather than their history.Shanghai is coastal city,which is an important factor why its prosperous.Xi’an,an ancient city,undeveloped though it is,is the capital of many dynasties,studying this old city can help understand more accurately the people’s behavior of that country.
Major cities have been and shall always be crucial to a country’s development,which also makes it beneficial to know the trend of it.But rich cities can not completely described as the a country,nor could they be of more importance than others,as rich people can not marked as all the people.The better way to know a country’s characteristics is to study the ordinary cities,especially the old ones.
