242、The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of Groveton College.
"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."

In this argument, the arguer draws a conclusion that institutions should adopt the similar honor codes as using in Groventon to prevent cheating. However, this analysis is unconvincing for several critical flaws.

To begin with, the arguer simple assumes the situation of institutions is similar to that of Groveton, but there is no evidence to support that it is really comparable. As we know, there are fundamental differences between them, such as the quality of students. For example, most students in Groveton College are honest enough that they could fully fulfill what they commit in the honor code. On the contrary, students in other institutions may not as honest as those in Groveton. As a result, it could not obtain the similar consequence that reported cheating cases are decreased in Groveton. Only if the arguer could provide more evidence that various conditions of students are alike in these colleges, we are not convinced by this analogy.

In the second place, although a data shows that the figure of reported cases of cheating in Groveton is declined in these five years, it could not fully prove the validity of the honor code. A regulation in this code is that students conform with the code voluntarily and they have rights to notify a faculty member if they suspect others cheating. It is possible that students who have really cheated in examinations are not being reported in that they made an agreement that they cheated in exams together but not notify each other. Then the figure of reported cheating also could be down, which does not represent that real cheating cases decreasing. Therefore, the declined figure provided by arguer is questionable.

Last but not least, the result in the survey, investigated by Groventon honor council, is not persuasive. Although students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without, it could not represent that they really do not cheat anymore. There are such many factors that allure students to cheat in exams, such as awards and scholarships offering offered to students with high scores. A possibility is that students commit that they will not cheat in exams, but they disobey their commitment under the motives of obtaining high scores. What is more, the survey is made by Groveton honor council, an organization pushing the code. It is possible that this organization provide inaccurate conclusion in order to declare the advantage of the code.

In Summary, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. Only if the arguer could give us more information to support the views that the students' quality which could affect the result of the honor code are alike and evidence provided in the argument is convincing, we could not draw the conclusion that institutions should adopt the similar honor codes. only if……not……这个用法学习一下。
