The reading passage is about the doubts on the prescribed fire approach of protecting lives and wealth of people. However, in the lecture, the professor uses three pieces of evidence to refute such skeptic: the great advantages of prescribed fire, the safety of it, and the small costs.

To begin with, there are lots of benefits of prescribed fire. It is said the period of burning will produce plenty of smoke which leads to air pollution and therefore global warming. However, in the lecture, professor argues that as a good strategy used for thousands of years, it has many advantages. First of all, it prevents wooden material producing ash and help nutrition from recycling. Secondly, it has the function of stimulating the growth of trees and makes the forest stronger. Thirdly, prescribed fire can avoid fire becoming a hazard big one. Thus, in fact, prescribed burning does little harm but good to people and society.

In addition, prescribed burning is safe enough. It is understandable that people worry about the safety of burning. However, after the practical testing for thousands of years, it is worthy to believe this approach is security. There are numerous people taking part in this activity and they always take care of the time and place of it. In short, prescribed burning is supervised by many people who can guarantee its safety.

Lastly, prescribed fire actually cost small. Compared with damaged wild fire, such protecting method can indeed save plenty of time for people. Because to fight with the hazard fire, people have to spend ten times more money than prescribed fire spend. So it is much cheaper than other methods.

The professor in the reading passage doubts the reasons listed by the author of the reading passage. The author cites the causes that UK transferred from cottage production to factory industry are due to the improvement of technology, the legal protection as well as the requirement of less cost. However, the professor refutes these points by refuting these reasons.

To begin with, the professor claims the technology advances not directly lead to the change.  In early Industry Revolution, the employment preferred to hire more workers rather to buy new machines, because these workers were more efficient than those machines. So technology is not an important factor.

Additionally, legal protection does not play any function. The professor uses the example of Holland of UK to illustrate it. Holland was also promoted such law, however, the cottage production didn't become factory based production. Thus, this kind of legal protection actually does not necessarily contribute to the transition.

Lastly, the cost of factory industry actually increased rather than decreasing. Expense has been added through following ways: transportation, renting land, hiring workers and building factories. All of them definitely increase the cost. Hence, compared with cottage production, factory-based industry requires more input.

To sum up, after careful scrutiny of the professor, the reasons listed in the reading passage are all invalid.
