political crime
this is a wonderful article, fully demonstrating the critical thinking and beautiful wording.
the author calls for a reform of the politics, a returning to the moral obligation. first by interpreting the machiacellism, the falsehood of those who declared violence for the safety of people is proven by the eloquence. due to the increasing awareness and weight of public opinion , crafty policy brings nothing but being discarded.  only those supported by people can last politically. the progress of public reasonableness is the main force to render politics
more honest and impartial.  what does a remedy look like?
what kind of character needed for a qualified politic man? honest, free from envy and hatred,

summary

the author argues that the sex law in america is unjust, and the way of doing this--the politician the public enacted more indiscriminate law brings more harm than good.

the sadden story of Megan is alarming and the Megan laws stands sound.

but the politicians, acting as political right, propose stronger laws to cater for the fearful parents.

as a result, ever-growing offenders present. what is more , in some states, irrelevant actions are banned, such as visiting prostitutes, consensual sex and indecent exposure. but not all the person on the list are dangerous.

the arguments of the author include: a, let the punishment fit the crime. b the law punishing the family for no reason. c, the harsh law do little helpful.

comments----

i agree that sensible laws should replace the vengeful one. by enacting those vengeful laws, the cost increased and the benefit decrease. since the vengeful laws do more penalty to the convicted with less aggression, and in turn , render the dangerous one more dangerous. this is the effect of unfair law. the public should be reasonable in voting for those laws.

the aim of education

the aim of education
i do not quite follow the ideas of this article, since the religion and god always seems unfamilar.
but this does not prevent my ideas on the aim of education. unlike the question in the article, I reckon the aim does not have to be connected to the God. just recall the very initial period of human beings, the experience and common sense are passed down to the young to enable the tribute survive.
nowadays, education serves as the necessary measurement to translate the young into a normal individual who can respect the universal value of mankind, get along with others peacefully and support himself /herself in the society with more uncertainty and mobility.
however, education can be utilized as a tool to implant the wrong value, to prevent the public from becoming enlightened thus maintaining the dictatorship.

I am a fan of google, enjoying the excellent services from reader to wave, though some of which seem complex to my computer knowledge. it is the spirit and moral conscience of google that attract me more than their fascinating products. i believe any one who looks forward to a more enlightened chinese future will choose to support google. to google, once you go it, you never come back.
the infamous censorship of internet all over the world, especially launched by chinese government, are doomed to a complete failure. just as Yogu once said," you can resist an army invading, but can not resist an idea whose time has come". the relationship between technology and spreading civilization is best demonstrated here in china.

though women will have become the majority of the american workforce, unsatisfactory situation still be here, including that they are still under-represented at the top of companies. and the problems of child-rearing.the flextime help to alleviate the latter problem. then the scenarios between

america and other countries is analyzed. compared with the scandinavian sort , which includes quotas hiring and other , the article suggests different ways for america, such measurements as paid maternity leave and flexible work time should be considered. as to the remaining glass ceilings, the reason is not mentioned here and a promising foresight can be expected.

issue: as a result of the separation of the church and state, religion is excluded from public schools and colleges. it seems that religion has been discriminated since then, how should the public schools deal with religious content presents itself as a hot potato.
a committee consisted of different religious experts is established to obtain a general suggestion.
as a fundamental principle of any democratic society, the right of freedom of speech should be

protected and respected, including the religion 's advocating his belief. but since the public schools play special role in instilling ideas and valve to the youngster, a limited right should be applied there instead of in other aspects.

the article holds an ironical tone to those arts organization receiving fund. and the artist who seek for more investment have become a state-sponsored actors, preaching the explicit religious creeds.
the organization argues that their functioning well demonstrates a well operating of the economic. but I wonder how the benefit or profit claimed by the organization come ?
the article 's reason includes: in the past the organization served as a vivid symbol of our commitment to free expression. and now it is an agent of  state-sponsored moral engineering.

the tone of this article is of a little preachment.
conformity is a contract signed by those who are reasonable, thus avoiding the rule of jungle taking over the earthly world. it is the adherence to the spirit of the contract that entitle the developed countries achieve where they are now. respect others and be yourself, then all of us can expect a better world to live in.

What Could You Live Without?

Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times
Nicholas D. Kristof

On the Ground
Share Your Comments About This Column
Nicholas Kristof addresses reader feedback and posts short takes from his travels.

Times Topics: PhilanthropyKevin Salwen, a writer and entrepreneur in Atlanta, was driving his 14-year-old daughter, Hannah,

back from a sleepover in 2006. While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes coupe on one side and a homeless

man begging for food on the other.

“Dad, if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal,” Hannah protested. The light changed and they

drove on, but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do

something.

“What do you want to do?” her mom responded. “Sell our house?”

Warning! Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager. Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family

home and donating half the proceeds to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.

Eventually, that’s what the family did. The project — crazy, impetuous and utterly inspiring — is chronicled in a book by

father and daughter scheduled to be published next month: “The Power of Half.” It’s a book that, frankly, I’d be nervous

about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it. An impressionable child reads this, and the next thing you know

your whole family is out on the street.

At a time of enormous needs in Haiti and elsewhere, when so many Americans are trying to help Haitians by sending everything

from text messages to shoes, the Salwens offer an example of a family that came together to make a difference — for

themselves as much as the people they were trying to help. In a column a week ago, I described neurological evidence from

brain scans that altruism lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primal gratifications such as food and

sex. The Salwens’ experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.

Mr. Salwen and his wife, Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better off in a bigger house. But after they

downsized, there was much less space to retreat to, so the family members spent more time around each other. A smaller house

unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendly house.

“We essentially traded stuff for togetherness and connectedness,” Mr. Salwen told me, adding, “I can’t figure out why

everybody wouldn’t want that deal.”

One reason for that togetherness was the complex process of deciding how to spend the money. The Salwens researched causes

and charities, finally settling on the Hunger Project, a New York City-based international development organization that has

a good record of tackling global poverty.

The Salwens pledged $800,000 to sponsor health, microfinancing, food and other programs for about 40 villages in Ghana. They

traveled to Ghana with a Hunger Project executive, John Coonrod, who is an inspiration in his own right. Over the years, he

and his wife donated so much back from their modest aid-worker salaries that they were among the top Hunger Project donors in

New York.

The Salwens’ initiative hasn’t gone entirely smoothly. Hannah promptly won over her parents, but her younger brother, Joe,

was (reassuringly) a red-blooded American boy to whom it wasn’t intuitively obvious that life would improve by moving into a

smaller house and giving money to poor people. Outvoted and outmaneuvered, Joe gamely went along.

The Salwens also are troubled that some people are reacting negatively to their project, seeing them as sanctimonious

showoffs. Or that people are protesting giving to Ghana when there are so many needy Americans.

Still, they have inspired some converts. The people who sold the Salwens their new home were so impressed that they committed

$100,000 to the project. And one of Hannah’s closest friends, Blaise, pledged half of her baby-sitting savings to an

environmental charity.

In writing the book, the Salwens say, the aim wasn’t actually to get people to sell their houses. They realize that few

people are quite that nutty. Rather, the aim was to encourage people to step off the treadmill of accumulation, to define

themselves by what they give as well as by what they possess.

“No one expects anyone to sell a house,” said Hannah, now a high school junior who hopes to become a nurse. “That’s kind

of a ridiculous thing to do. For us, the house was just something we could live without. It was too big for us. Everyone has

too much of something, whether it’s time, talent or treasure. Everyone does have their own half, you just have to find it.”

As for Kevin Salwen, he’s delighted by what has unfolded since that encounter at the red light.

“This is the most self-interested thing we have ever done,” he said. “I’m thrilled that we can help others. I’m blown

away by how much it has helped us.”

i can imagine the delicious food in china would probably be the most important reason of the nostalgia for those who study aboard , if not the only one.
by linking the obesity with the recent hot topic- health care , the author suggests that since "each obese American racks up medical bills 42% higher than an American of normal weight, " a healthy diet campaign may help to slow the rising rate of medical cost.  however , i doubt about this assertion on two reasons. one : how many dollars do the obese have to pay more than those of normal weight? are all the health-care cost of the obese paid duo to their overweight. if not , how many of the proportion ? an estimated number will say more.
two: as far as I am concerned , the dozens of billion dollars of health-care cost lie in the current  regime of american medicare , where the hospital tend to treat the patient without more than needed to make a profit, then the bill is handled to the insurer, who readily turn to the government for help. and the vicious cycle forms as it is today.

why the doctor keep refusing to employ the info technology into their works . the article describes one possible reason: the convergence of info and biology may undermine the authority of the doctors. and hence, i guess , the doctor may receive a lower income, which of course is not what they wants. the new trend in health-care will probably break down the unbalance of information held between the patient and doctor, thus promising the patient more transparency and meanwhile more responsibility.

I can not help but wonder is the dance for rainfall in the definition of art, or just superposition.
art expresses the sentiments of human beings and science seeks the Law of nature.
I can safely contend that the music, especially those about religion , console the weary mind of us in most time. I can steadily demonstrate that the poetry, particularly those on love and life, reassure us in most time , despite of the author may suffered from the sadness himself.
once upon a time, when the physicist believed that the cosmos can be described using a set of equation created by mankind, and that given a definite initial condition, all motions of the material can be predicted thereby, we seemed embraced the certainty forever. but, as the article has mentioned, the quantum mechanics presents itself as a ghost ,torturing the mind of those who believed in determinism. of course , the art can upset us, which just prove that the art depicted the very mind-set of human, and the disaster we endured, since if not ,the art is not art at all.
art and science , the present of we mankind granted by the god, are the tools in which we appreciate beauty, overcome the fear and feel the eternality.

Emerson : self-reliance.
to tell the truth, the article gives me a headache.
I hope i will not go for it again. it occur to me two words : self-knowledge and individualism .
the last sentence express the idea of emerson clearly: to be in the crowd with a independent thought.
But it seems what I have read here is just a small portion of his attitude. The wiki says :”…..His views, the basis of Transcendentalism, suggested that God does not have to reveal the truth but that the truth could be intuitively experienced directly from nature.[109]….’
I would like to read more before returning to any further comments.

Emerson calls for independence from the Europe and claims that one day the American can be the pole-star. And then he points out his rules on reading and thinking, that is dare to create and critical reading with active soul.
It occurs to me that the importance and mystery of self-knowledge. Perhaps emerson had an adequate experience on it. By studying nature, one can read the oracle of God; by meditation , one can feel the God. But there may be several Gods. Every time when involved with the God, I am confused and skeptic about it.
He can create his own God. So do I.
