John Innes Centre始创于1910，是一所专注于植物研究的综合型研究所。首任所长Bateson是著名遗传学家，他第一个提出了Genetics(遗传学）这一名词，并创立了《遗传学》杂志。三十年代，JIC以培育优异园艺品种驰名世界。二战以后，随着遗传学的发展，JIC开始占据植物生物学的领先地位。1964年Robin Holliday提出了著名的Holliday模型。七十年代，Jonathen Jones等人第一次克隆出植物基因。80年代提出了著名的cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter，创立了Sainsbury Lab，与剑桥大学Plant Breeding Institute合并；率先在全球使用拟南芥模式植物研究。进入90年代以后开始占据欧洲植物生物学的统治地位，领导完成了拟南芥全基因测序，Enric Coen等提出了著名的花发育ABC模型。进入21世纪，JIC仍然保持着良好的发展势头。Caroline Dean关于开花调控FLC的研究成为过去十年的热点；2006年David Baulcombe爵士因为在RNAi研究中的杰出贡献获得炸药奖提名，但最终未能获奖；2008年Cathie Martin成为植物学第一杂志Plant Cell有史以来第一位女性且非美国裔主编。从今年开始，在建立100周年之际，JIC开始面向全球招收全奖暑期实习生，此举的目的是为了吸引更多的优秀人才进入植物学这一领域。今年的实习报名工作已经开始，以下是主要简介：
Eligibility: UK students should ideally be in the penultimate year of a degree in any branch of science (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics). Students studying outside the UK should ideally be eligible to apply for a PhD within 1-2 years of the summer programme. Applicants: Funding is provided for 15 students. Ten places are for students currently studying at UK universities (including overseas students) funded by the Nuffield foundation and five places are available for students currently studying outside the UK. The John Innes Centre and Sainsbury laboratory provide students the unique opportunity to spend the summer on their research training programme. The Undergraduate Summer Research Training Programme is aimed at undergraduates with an interest in a science research career. Fifteen places are available to exceptional and motivated students.
