marital ambivalence rules the literary scene 文学大部分描写婚姻问题?
officer prescribes marriage as the only certain way out of Felipe's immigration dilemma 找出了一个解决方法

1Elizabeth Gilbert does these reluctant wives one better.什么意思?
2 Gilbert cites statistics, scientific studies and her painful experience with her first marriage — the impetus for the worldwide spiritual ramble of EPL — as her reasons for not wanting to tie the knot.
3 This slog through one woman's relationship angst feels, in the end, like much ado about nothing.
4 Committed gives us a woman trapped in a command performance she's too smart not to be dubious about.
5 There are useful insights into the dilemma of modern marriage here, but the overall effect of the heavily padded Committed is like that of being called, over and over, by a friend who wants to talk your ear off about her impending nuptials.
6 This recipe for marital disaster comes with scattered recipes you'd hesitate to trust, given the horrific disorder of Powell's upstairs kitchen.感觉很不错,不过不知道怎么翻译?
7 The honesty of the admission doesn't cleanse the implied disrespect for those — from the real Eric to her fans — who adore her. Powell was also sentenced to sequel, although her amply demonstrated lack of humility suggests she was happier to comply than Gilbert.

Comment:
From the ironical article, I merely got a glance at what the impressed emotion abreact from the author--strongly opposed the marital literary with the sample of two best writer and their work.

They poked fun at relationship that are aiming for marriage. Gilbert cites statistics, scientific studies and her painful experience with her first marriage — the impetus for the worldwide spiritual ramble of EPL — as her reasons for not wanting to tie the knot. Whereas Powell makes no apologies and no effort to be likable in Cleaving, a ghastly work of revelation without enough self-reflection. They overshare their scattered personal life, seeming more than just marital ambivalence. Even worse, be advised: they take us only to the altar. If you really wanna know life post sunset is like, get some real counsel.

Sorry, just copy some words from the passage.

[REBORN FROM THE ASHES][comment][01.08]

本帖最后由 tequilawine 于 2010-1-9 17:28 编辑

acquires greater weight有影响力, its sound common sense takes the place of the finessing of the diplomatists

1 After having resorted for so long to cunning and falsehood, to intrigue and violence, politics, were it only for the novelty of the thing, should try the effect of fair dealing, tolerance, and justice. 并列结构是什么成分呀?
2 Those who put their adversaries to death by poison or upon the scaffold often undergo a like fate; those who send others into exile are exiled in their turn. 恶有恶报 因果循环
3 Liberty is not to be imposed by the guillotine; fraternity is not established by the extermination of its adversaries; the reign of justice and equality is not founded by popular or judicial massacres.
4 The disciples of Machiavelli declare that politicians should resort to violence and even to crime, if to do so be necessary for the safety of the people, but what they call the safety of the people is often nothing more than the safety of their rule.
5 This being the case, instead of saying, as under the old system of politics, "Cunning, still cunning, and always cunning; audacity, again audacity, and always audacity," the watchword ought to be under the modern system of politics, "Straightforwardness, still straightforwardness, and always straightforwardness; justice, still justice, and always justice." 这句话怎么翻译好呀?
6 it is allowable to hope for 并不是遥不可及a state of things in which the administration will be impartial, the legislation equitable, the elections sincere, and in which industry and merit will be rewarded.
7 The European Governments show better faith in respect to their financial engagements at the present day than in the past; they are conscious that it is to their interest not to tamper with their coinage, and not to go bankrupt, and for the reason that public confidence in their credit is their principal force. Why should they not arrive at understanding that they ought to have the same respect for liberty and human life as for the public debt? 类比反问,效果好。
8 A lofty sentiment does not spoil politics.
9 A people that used to be chivalrous, that despised money, that was fired with ardor for noble causes, now for political liberty, now for military glory, does not become positively skeptical, indifferent to principles, and attached to material interests in a day.
10 "If we would pass for men of integrity," says Cicero, "we should not only display probity ourselves, but exact it of those about us."
11 Good sense has ceased to guide our thoughts and actions since we have adopted German pessimism and socialism, English evolutionism, Italian skepticism, Russian Nihilism, and Asiatic Buddhism.
12 this is the only way to save them from the clutches of envy and hatred.
13 In a society in which there is talk of nothing else but of the struggle for life, of the rights conferred by might, of the elimination of the weak, of the disgrace of poverty, of the all-powerfulness of wealth, religion teaches self-sacrifice, respect, and love for the poor, and responsibility before God and before the conscience.

comment

Should politics accord with morality? Answer comes from the author is obvious approval. The reason why we should combine them comes from the following dialogue offering for us, and with that, we can clearly get the mind of what is the inner relationship between them---humanity evolves with society by justice, liberty and so forth in moral spirituality. And only through this way, we can attain to what we want—a peaceful society--- a wonderful world for kindness human.
And from the passage, I get familiar with the famous philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero, perceived to be the most versatile mind of Rome, whose whole life are fraught with tribulation, leaving us abundance of great works.

[REBORN FROM THE ASHES][comment][01.08]

pluka

This essay is so thought-provocative that instead of picking out good sentences, phrases and expressions, I'd rather keep it as it is, with its fluidity and integrity.

While reading the article (and being filled with admiration), I suddenly came up with a man: a man who plays with tricks and juggleries, coaxes the public, flirts with business and media, and unconcernedly yet freely tiptoe dances at the political stage. His name is, of course, Silvio Berlusconi, the prime minister of Italy. Though his fame has been (or has long been) tarnished and reputation tainted with unceasing scandals and inappropriate performances in public, there are still ardent supporters who believe he is man to steer Italy towards the prosperity. He is crafty, and capable as well; he shows apparent, if not unbridled, sexism, regarding and promoting his women subordinates according to appearance and their affinity with him; he behaviors unbelievably frivolous in serious international meetings, drawing women's bra and showing it to other presidents and prime ministers. Well, this man is out of rule. He's notorious as a politician, yet somehow holds an almost irresistible charm to some people. Humm, that's interesting.

Thx hugesea for sharing so enlightening an essay! Learned a lot. And I love this kind of topics~smile~

1 Long-term prediction, let alone control, is out of the question.
2 But this criticism attacks a caricature.什么意思?

3 In many simple choices, the possible states of nature are bimodal – the team will beat the spread or not, a hurricane will damage a house or not. At other times, they extend along a single dimension, such as the range of possible returns to an investment. 不懂?

4
Risk resides in simple choices, but uncertainty arises in messy situations, where the variety of possible actions is nearly infinite.

5 Or to take a sports analogy, the punter chooses whether to bet or not, but the coach must juggle myriad interactions of trades, training, strategy and tactics to win.

6 They should not fool themselves, however, into believing they can reduce all uncertainty to risk.

7 Business, to paraphrase the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, can only be understood backward, but it must be managed forward.

8 So, how can executives survive and thrive in an uncertain world? Adapt or die, is the short answer.

9 This is an easy concept to understand, but it is hard to translate into practice.说是容易,做时难。承上启下的句子。

10 In an uncertain world, managers must recognize that their mental models are provisional – useful for now but subject to revision as circumstances change.

11 Companies must, for example, balance defense and offence.

12 They also provide the foundation for rapidly scaling a business if circumstances warrant.

13 In contrast to specialized resources – such as dedicated manufacturing capacity or real estate – a war chest of cash or low leverage also allows a company to survive threats and seize opportunities that executives did not anticipate. 专有名词?

[REBORN FROM THE ASHES][comment][01.10]

I have to admit this essay is pretty good. In order to give us a clear comprehensive perceiving of nuances between the uncertainty and risk, the author sets up a series of cogent ensamples to demonstrate up forward.

Confronting uncertainty, long time prediction, let alone control, is out of question. However, we can aspire to master uncertainty in a way a seasoned sailor masters the sea, that means, were we to be that, we need to abundant in insight and experiences to harness the wind and ride out the storm.

It follows that we can see the differences between risk and uncertainty distinctively, as one resides in simple choices, the other arises in messy situations, where the variety is infinite. That makes vivid to acknowledge that we can handle with risk better than uncertainty, which is unavoidable face of life.

So how can we especially as managers survive and thrive in an uncertain world? Adapt or die, is the short answer.

Easy saying than done. But we do have some hints to pursue, that comes from three aspects, strategic anticipation, organizational agility, uncertainty absorption.

1 Which makes it all the more important to ask whether America’s approach is the right one.
2 Small wonder most sex offenders report being harassed. A few have been murdered. Many are fired because someone at work has Googled them.
3 There are three main arguments for reform.
4 This is unwise, but hardly a reason for the law to ruin their lives.
5 And registers give parents a false sense of security: most sex offenders are never even reported, let alone convicted.

comment:
Law confirms justice. At the invention of the mundane world, as God believed, people can sever as communist. Unfortunately, when we merge into society, develop our knowledge, continue evolving as Earth goes, unavoidably, we come up with sin or crime which forces us to confront it and need to solve it. It follows the regulation--laws making us obey or being punished, the only utilization is just a warning to let us know what am I doing is wrong, let alone revenge or anything else.

Seeking equity is the basis of our law, but if we really put it into action without discrimination, it makes us contemplate.

Anger or hatred can not solve the problem, only worse. However whether justice resides in vengeful penalty or sensitive lesson is obvious for human, as we know, revenge and forgiveness always are part of mainstream morality in society. We can forgive people who commit some mistakes that we can fix, whereas when we confront some wound comes from inner heart, it will be hard to redeem even when the criminal already knows trauma which bring to the victims disastrous effect. It is no wonder we can let a shoplifer goes without serious motion, but we can not let a rapist or paedophile restart his new life once again.

So what is the essence of Law? Definitely not as what we act now, by which we use it as a weapon to trigger a war, a gavel to put someone in prison, a scandal to humiliate someone before a large a crowd. Law is not for punishing but preventing.

1 "We are told," says Dr. Buttrick, quoting Harvard's James Bryant Conant, "that education is preparation for the 'good life,' but neither the word 'good' nor the word 'life' is given any content. Or we are told [by John S. Brubacher] that the 'general aim' of education 'is only that of pupil growth.' But what kind of 'growth'? . . . Or we are told [by William Heard Kilpatrick] that education must assume 'increasing responsibility for participation in projecting ideas of social change.' But again we must ask: What kind of change and in what direction? . . ." 好例子,容易举出。
2 Cash & Gadgets. These questions, says Dr. Buttrick, the educators do not answer, for "recent education has almost deified an attitude of suspended judgment, blind to the fact that while suspended judgment may be possible in matters of opinion or unfinished scientific research, it is not possible on any deeper level of life.
3 We may suspend judgment . . . about the cause of the sudden inroad of lamprey eels in Lake Michigan, but we cannot suspend judgment on whether to steal or be honest, or on whether man is a mechanism or a soul.
4 The cult of 'objective study' likewise cannot stand scrutiny。表达疑问的好用法。

Comment:
I wonder after reading this article, what will the atheists react? The dispute of the issue has lasted for a long time, and we are still in the dilemma, since none can give a cogent portrait of it. We are inculcated with the creed that the real essence of education is to gain knowledge of nature and to make our life more spectacular. in contrast to that, the pastor gave us a totally reverse idea about it that what we should care is not about whether to steal or be honest, or about whether man is mechanism or a soul. the truth really matters conceal in our inner spiritual world, a world we can know our ephemeral lives should devote to the divine and hallow generosity and religion belief.

The cult of religious belief may can not stand scrutiny from young guy, growing up in an earthy world without respecting anything, even worse some of which indulge themselves into numerous toxic and poisonous carnival. But no one can naysay to accept that we still live in an world amazing and marvelous that even some famous physical scientists convert themselves into religion. Satirized that we can not conclude the assumption in hasty, supplying some reliable evidence often becomes the crux, but how can we elicit spiritual world form a mundane one. It is radiculous.

though the pastor already gave us a flickering light to follow through the dawn, most of populace still stick on their way, as the bible said, "the way to death is board where so many people go, the way to immortal is narrow where access for only a few."

1 But the decision to offer a censored search page prompted an outcry from human-rights activists and some members of Congress that the company was turning a blind eye to its "Don't be evil" motto for the sake of access to the lucrative Chinese market.
2 Given the company's tempestuous four years in China, the odds the authorities will now compromise are slim.

Comment:
What is the basic infrastructure of human societyFreedom is the short answer. As we all know, all the modern civilization community comes into spectacular prosperity by the means of liberal wills which penetrate into every aspects of our daily life.

Liberty always stands on numerous efforts, even bleeding. Never comes easy for human in order to get what we really want. So does whole nation. History demonstrated the truth. Delving into the surge of historic time, most regimes collapse into dust because of its arbitrary authoritarian, which hints us that people under high pressure mostly become more radical and impulsive to resist.

This piece of news just clarify it. At times we may well give up some of important morality just for lucrative incentives, by all means we can, finally, we abandon the motto we kept before. Ironic is that we still try to conceal in noble cuticle. To arouse the lost inner conscience, we need push them to notice the whole populace staring them what they do, the easiest way, I think, is to let their real face showed on stage, resembling a downpour from ones’ confused mind.

Without freedom, life is worthy for nothing. How could you imagine you can not choose the party you advocate, have free speech, or whether to call into question of our government, whether to gain our own rights—equal rights.

Allow me to quote Martin Luther King’s style in conclusion: I have a dream that one day our children live in equal peace nation, where no discriminative exists, that one day our children have chance to criticize the authority , where no consequence follows.

1 This particular advance comes with two stings.表达缺点的好方式。
2 In America three out of four people thrown out of work since the “mancession” began have been male. 状语插入
3 Surely, comes the argument, there is a way to speed up the revolution—and improve the tough lives of many working women and their children?
4 If that means massive intervention, in the shape of affirmative-action programmes and across-the-board benefits for parents of all sorts, the answer is no. 假设否定
5 To begin with, promoting people on the basis of their sex is illiberal and unfair, and stigmatises its beneficiaries.
6 During the second world war, when America’s menfolk were off at the front, the government had to summon up the image of Rosie the Riveter, with her flexed muscle and “We Can Do It” slogan, to encourage women into the workforce.

Comment:
Have the discriminative of sexism gone away from us? Simply answer is no. Although nowadays I think it is pretty normal to see women, who work in the high position in a company with a powerful right, to compete with men to exemplify the equal ability to their husbands, some of them still have to give up their booming career for beloved family—their children. So the liberty comes with the sting---family value. The most important issue about that, in my opinion, is that our traditional custom which make us feel ordinary that women need to take care of children after birth, besides we mentioned above, they still have to confront long absenteeism for their parturition.

Affirmative-action programmes and across-the-board benefits for parents of all sorts is not the solution, but worse. We can know from the author explanation of that, from both sides, promoting someone on basis of sex is illiberal and unfair, and stigmatises its beneficiaries. In contrast to that, from the other side, practical problems also exists in it, that lengthy periods of paid maternity leave can put firms off hiring women, that’s why women got less promoted after married , even worse after having children.

Road comes from meander way. We can sponsor for the professional women for their bearing period, in order to release some burden from the company, also provide them some kinds of self continuing education during off work to keep pace with the fast changing society. What’s more, to let them more relive, work nursery or some measures like that is indispensible, in other words, we can make mother work with child in the same place under their noses. To do it by fathers may not be bad. Who knows!

Advantages linger in the whole work force of women. It is already known that women gradually take the control of the world with valid statistic analysis. With more free of home, the unexpectable of the work force will affect our future shockingly.
