TOPIC: ARGUMENT76 - The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.
"A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin."
正文:
The argument concludes that the Luxess face cream is effective in improving the
condition of
facial skin. To support this claim, the author recites the result of a consumer responses study. At first glance, the author's reasoning seems to be appealing, but on examination of it proves to be deeply problematic. We may find that the argument is flawed in several aspects which render it unpersuasive as it stands.
First of all, the reality and generalization of the study are open to question. We are not informed that how many volunteers in the group of the study, and the detailed information about the volunteers. If there was only several people in the group or the people were in similar conditions, the conclusion drown from these would be suspectable. Otherwise, the author fails to point out that how the study was conduct and who conduct the study . If the conductor was engaged by the company which produces the Luxess face cream, or the volunteers were conducted in the study, the ruselts would be greatly unconvincing.
Secondly, how to confirm the improvement of the facial skin? Is it prefect to judge it just by the volunteers’ reports? The author does not provide enough evidences to support that the condition of facial skin are becoming better than before, but the reports from the volunteers. However, the feeling is not stable. Lacking the information of the physical date of the progress, it is impossible to access the validity of the results. What’s more, the study has only processed for one month, it is
too short to find all kinds of effects on the facial skin. Is there some people having allergy reaction or other negative effects which need several months to be verified? Thus, without enough information about the study, it is it is fallacious to draw any conclusion at all.
In addition, there may be other factors that could contributed to improving the condition of facial skin. Actually, it is equal possible that the weather in this month become more moist than before, and the skin benefits from it. Or it is possible that the mild soap is useful in the progress of the skin’s condition. Without ruling out such alternative explanation the author can not convince me that Luxess is effective in improving the condition of the facial skin.
To sum up, the author’s conclusion is ill conceived and poorly supported. To strengthen the argument, the author must consider and rule out more evidences about the above-mentioned possibilities.
