Issue144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Wandering in an exhibition of abstract artistic works, facing with seemly random lines and colors, what are you wondering about? So far, the artists' tasks have been completed, while from which you may receive nothing. At this moment, you need a critic to paraphrase them for you. You listen to the critics' recommendation, think about the means within the works; and finally sense of beauty may hit you. Who endows artistic works, no matter whether abstract ones or not, with lasting value of appreciation? Apparently, it is not the artists, who give birth to these works though, but critic.
First of all, we have to admit the contribution of artists in the creation of these treasures in the human history. Artists always have a unique insight into themselves as well as the society, or even history. Thus their works become carriers of their feelings and emotions. Rashomon, directed by Akira Kurosawa in 1950s, was claimed to be one of the most valuable movies on record because through depicting the ugly side of human, the screenwriter and director delivered their understanding to the unreliability and imperceptibility of a man as well as the renaissance of humanism and morality.
However, these works the artists created are full of thinking and connotation, but audiences sometimes are not able to understand them due to unprofessional methods or incomprehensive sights. How can artists and audiences be connected and resonate with each other?
It is the critics who play an important role in bridging the two groups together. They always have a relatively professional and broad vision, allowing them grasp the theme of the works easily and comprehensively; meanwhile, they possess incisive writing to express their viewpoints. On one hand, criticizing is a process of advertising. Pursuing spiritual wealth is instinctive for human beings; while in the society today, people have to face competitions to survive, less time and energy left to concern every movement in the art field. But critics open a door with their standpoints for people to take a look at what they are interested in. On the other hand, critics' comments, applause or criticism, provide people various viewing angle towards the works, from which creator's thoughts are appreciated, and the significant value, which brings people back to nature and purity, is embodied. Generations of musicians have left us a large number of music, yet among which we may get confused. We have to turn to critics and seek help from their comments that are full of ideas. According to what critics say, we may find our figures
in the music, get resonance with it, and finally accept it. When the value of music is accepted by the society, we could probably conclude that it will be of lasting value.
What's more, commentary from critics can even excavate the value of artistic works that may be neglected by the society for a while, placing emphasis on them and redeeming the status of the works and the artists. Van Gogh, the painter who created Sunflowers, is a typical example. Though today respected as a distinguished artist in the 19th century, he was not acknowledged when he was alive. Later, everything changed. One British critic once said, "Van Gogh devoted all his energy to pursuing the simplest, the most common thing in the world, the Sun." People gradually accepted his appearance of self-consciousness and chase of brightness in his paintings.
Generally speaking, we cannot overlook the influence of the critics in valuing artistic works.
In sum, although artistic works are created by artists, their lasting value is given by critic for the reason of drawing attention from the public on the works and guiding the direction of people's perception to them. |
