Issue 30: The primary goal of technological advancement should be to increase people's efficiency so that everyone has more leisure time.

Since our ancestors tried to hunt an animal with a stone but not his own hands, technology appeared among human beings. After thousands of years of development, today’s technology has made our life entirely different. But now we are facing a problem: what is the primary goal of technological advancement? Someone choose production efficiency which obviously satisfies the demand of more leisure time and less work. However, I do not agree with the idea.
Nowadays, as the technology is developing so fast that people ignore some problems. Some of the problems have emerged and are deteriorating. The most urgent one is global warming. Global warming is mainly caused by the increase of carbon dioxide and other air pollutions in atmosphere. Most of these pollutions come from mineral fuels which are widely used in modern vehicles and industrial production. The large scale of modern manufacturing ejects tons of air pollutions every day, and the large amount of cars and buses in big cities also help contaminate our climate every minute. Then the temperature rises and overheated glaciers in sea melt away. In this way our cities which are nearest to the sea would be swallowed some day in the future. In order to avoid the deterioration of the environment, we must change the direction of technology research to an environmental harmless one. As the saying goes, one must drink as one brews.
Under this circumstance, our reckless technology will one day stab his master with his sword.
Moreover, technology also affects our moral system. On one hand, it consolidates our society and helps protect our morals. Policeman can catch a thief much easier than before, and every case’s evidence is easier to collect so we get fairer judgments. But on the other hand, which is considered more seriously, modern technology is corroding our traditional moral system. Monitors all around the world make people few secrets, clone technology challenges our traditional ethics, all kinds of new technology constantly strain our nerves. The question is, the moral system should be adjusted to new technology or new technology should be adjusted to traditions? I choose the latter one. We have lived with traditional morals for thousands of years. The system has proved itself a competent one. The traditional moral system contains our spiritual history which makes it the foundation of our modern society. Any attempts to change it thoroughly can only lead to entire society’s confusion. We should never risk our basis of development for some uncertain experiments.
In a word, technology should lead us to sustainable development but not some extremes. Many countries have taken methods to adjust their technological research direction. In 2009 in Copenhagen, almost all the countries leaders attended in the UN Climate Change Conference which was in order to cut the emission of carbon dioxide in the whole world. Though unfortunately, the Conference did not achieve a legal treaty, but a softer interim, the efforts every country has made are a signal of progress. In aspect of ethics, some actions are also taking place. For example, human clone technology is forbidden in the world which prevents the technology going to a moral extreme.
Now is the time to make the choice, and every mistake is fatal. So please be careful, and take action.
