The speaker holds the opinion that technologies influence and then determine social customs and ethics, which I should not agree with totally, it is the technologies gave us convenient and changed the way we live, but the social customs and ethics will not be determined by the technologies.

From the first industrial revolution hundreds of new technologies flushed into our lives, making our customs continuously change. Nights become safer with the lights, some people even love to have fan at night till the day and get back to sleep while the customs of the old is staying at home and seldom going out, the communication custom varies too, in ancient china, horses are used to convey the emergency messages, even the fastest one would cost three days on average from province to province, today email a letter for china to The USA just spent a few seconds for free. What tremendous changes have occurred to our customs? Technologies applied to our lives are impulses to the development of the society thus changing our lives to simpler ways as well as the customs and ethics.

Meanwhile the customs and ethics came into being long before the development of technologies, the primarily customs and ethics formed from the experiences or by the most respected one of a tribe, and formed to regulate people’s behavior. From the small things like no stealing of others to bigger ones like no fighting to death we just utilized them to form a harmonious and steady society. Some of the customs and ethnics are even written into papers to constrict people’s activities, we call it law. Instead of speaker’s assertion that technologies determine the customs and ethics, the fact is opposite in history, when the first car imported into china the empire’s mother took it angrily because its seats’ location against Chinese tradition, and then forbid using cars in china. It didn’t appear in china again until Qing dynasty corrupted, form the example above, we can’t concluded that the technologies determine the ethics.


When the technologies conflict with the traditions, people choose the ways that can make the society steady and peaceful like we abandon the technologies of coning for the final confusion about generation even though it may be useful to us, when the ethics compact with the technologies, even there will be some sacrifices in the new technologies, but the truth will finally revealed and then the new correct ethics will formed, so the application of some technologies is hard, the scientist will be punished by the church because their theory against the peoples’ concisions, some of them were sentenced to death, such as when there is a controversial opinion about the shape of the earth, even though the scientist who claim it the first is killed by the church to maintain the peace of the society, the truth changed the ethics finally. Truth cannot be covered and the also the ways to make society steady success.






Simply put, without technologies we cannot see the bright light at night, have technical ways for entertainment, and communicate with each other so easily, it really changes us, but it doesn’t decide the social customs and ethics which we can not ignore.
