186.The following is a recommendation fron the director of personnel to the president of Professional Printing Company.
In a recent telephone survey of automobile factory workers, older employees were less likely to report that having a supervisor presentt increases their productivty. Among workers aged 18 to 29, 27 percent said that they are more productive in the presence of their immediate supervisor, compared to 12 percent for those aged 30 or over, and only 8 percent for those aged 50 or over. Clearly, if our printing company hires mainly older employees, we will increase productivity and save money because of the reduced need for supervisors.
The editorial made a telephone survey of automobile factory workers which lead to a conclusion that the older employees will save money than any other kind of workers for they need less supervision. Also, the author believed that the conclusion made by the survey of automobile employees will fit the workers in the printing company as well. However, the conclusion cannot convince us for the following reasons.
First of all, the edtorial do not provide the percentage of workers who take part in the telephone survey. If the survey only investages a small part of the employees of the automobile factory, the survey itslef cannot support the result that older workers need less supervision than the others. On the other hand, the telephone survey itself has some shortages. We are unable to know whether these workers tell the turth. So in order to prove it we need make a survey more objective ,for example, make an observasion of employees’ work efficient in two conditons(working under the supervision and without supervison) without telling them and compare the result. In most times this kind of investigation report can tell us the turth.
In the second place, the author partly assumes that the older employees in automobile factory need less supervison will act the same in the printing company . It is a common sense that the working conditions and the way of work are quite different between the automobile factory and the printing company. So we cannot except the older employees in printing company performs the same as the ones in automobile factory does.
Finally, the author concludes that the hiring of older workers can save money by reducing the cost of hiring the supervisors. This suggestion seems to be reasonable if the conclusion above are right, however, the author did not take the salary of older workers in to account. If the older workers need more money which is more expensive than hiring supervisors, this suggestion will not execute by the printing company. Furthermore, the older workers may not as healthy as the younger ones, which may lead to the lower efficient than the younger employees.
In conclusion, the author provides no evidence that the older worker will more efficient and inexpensive than the younger one. The conclusion made in the automobile factory cannot apply in the printing company as well. The author need to make a more objective survy in the printing company to support his result and take both the salary of older employees and supervisors into accout. By fallowing this tips can the author get more reasonable results.
