TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

I agree with this statement that students should hold a critical attitude when they are learning no matter what it is. Nowadays, more and more students are taught without any thinking or doubts which is not good for their further development. Therefore, it is quite important to encourage the teenagers to ask and question in their study progress.

At first, as we all know, nothing is absolutely right. I remember once a teacher said to me: If we metaphor that the whole nature was a blackboard that was totally black at the beginning, then, what discovered today is just several separately small parts of it. I think this sentence made sense. Nobody can certainly promise which theory is absolutely right because it is impossible for scientists to light up the whole blackboard. Maybe something unknown plays a important role in the theory. For example, in the book written by Hawking, he pointed out the most famous theory Relativity built by Einstein has some mistake, although Einstein was regarded as the greatest scientists in the world. So, this reminds us that the knowledge we learn today are not all right and if we accept them totally ignoring the faith behind our world can not progress.

Then, I think that the more important benefit the students can get from skepticism is the ability of questioning the key factor of our society’s development. When our ancestors saw some phenomena accidently they would feel curious and wondered why these happened that might lead them to find evidences to explain their questions.
For this sake, if the students keep learning without doubting they may loose the ability which gave human beings the original power to study the nature. When this comes real, we human will stop our pace.

On the other hand, we should not encourage students to skeptic without any thinking. What we want to most see is that the students state their own ideas about a certain subject after a rigorous ponder. Only in this way can they improve the ability for further and independent research. Why some people can be great scientist and others can not is all because how they think and solve the problem. Before Galileo discover the real discipline of the solar system, the public deeply believed that the earth is the centre. However, he did not this is the reality. He, then, tried his best to invent a telescope to observe and, with the help of it, dogged out that our planet’s rotation is around the sun finally. This is exactly the way students should follow.

To sum it up, the purpose of education in modern society should not only spreading knowledge but also developing students’ ability of questioning and research. Besides the textbooks, notes and pens, when taking the class, students should also have the critical attitude.
