169.The followingappeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of PierceUniversity.
"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in asmall town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living insmall towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers andresearchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we atPierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new facultymember we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to beviewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly bewell spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, newprofessors will be more likely to accept our offers."

In thisargument, the arguer recommends that the Pierce University should offer somepositions for the spouses of their new hired professors in order to improve thequality of their faculty. To support this assertion, the arguer cites the successof this policy conducted by Bronston College. Finally, the arguer also draw theconclusion that the cost of the hiring the new professors’ spouses are good investment. However, the argument relies on series of fallacies, which render it unconvincing as itstands.

Firstly, There is no evidence to prove that the comparison betweenthe Bronston College and Pierce University. After all, the Bronston College isa college and located in a small town, but the Pierce University as comprehensiveuniversity may be found in the large city. It is common to seek a job much easierin the later one than in the small town. So it may not necessary for the PierceUniversity to offer positions for the spouses of their potential professors. Beforethe arguer provides more evidences to prove the similarity between them, thisassertion is unconvincing.

Secondly, even if these two schools are comparable, the arguer still fails to consider theother factor may also have an influence on the most gifted professors’ career choices. As we know, when considering the job offer, the professor normally focus moreon the reputation of the school, the teaching facilities, the academicenvironment, the benefit and so on, but not only to think whether the schoolcan also offer a position for their wives or husbands. Without ruling of these possible factors, the assertion is open to doubt.

Finally, evenif we accept hiring the spouses might attractto the most gifted professors, the arguer unsoundly conclude that the money spend on hiring the newprofessors’ spouses are goodinvestment. It is clear that hiring these spouses definitely result in theextra cost, however, there is no guarantee that these talent professor will ensureto the increase in revue of the university.

In conclusion, the assertion isunpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen that argument, the author would haveto provide a clear and sufficient evidence to prove the comparability between the Bronston College and Pierce University. To better evaluate the argument, the author also would need to getrid of the other factors may benefit to professor’s career choice.
