The arguer demonstrates a concern on the effective methods of study when learning facts. It can be divided into two statements, one is that ideas, trends, and concepts related to facts should be studied first before memorizing facts, and the other one is that students had learned less if they learn nothing but facts. From my perspectives, I fundamentally agree on the second statement while partially agree on the first.
First of all, let's tend to the second claim. What the purpose of education is should be examined in the first place. In my point of view, remarkable education actually focus on developing students ability of study and of thinking independently rather than on merely indoctrinate students those facts and exam their capability of memorizing. Learning that World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945 is of less significance while examining the reason why so many countries got involved, how did those countries react facing such situation, what the necessary connection between Great Depression and the war is may help students not only memorize the facts much easier, but also lead them to think how international relationship works and what's the intention one nation make action is. During this process, a habit of taking every possible consideration into account and searching for the essence and regularity of a phenomenon is cultivated. And that is what the education intended to achieve. Understandably, there lies the distinction between merely recording phenomenon that has no significant positive effect on the one hand, and examining the world and how it works with personal critical thinking on the other hand. So learning each fact alone will narrow the meaning of the word "learning" down, while learning the cause, effect, interact relationship between facts, and most importantly, learning how to make use of the fact is much more meaningful.
However, there're several levels of education during which different measures would be chosen to satisfy the needs of students that in different condition. If the first statement is well supported, then let me ask one question: how would a student memorize those ideas, trends, and concepts of those facts? On primary education level, studied complex ideas, trends, and concepts may somehow beyond their ability. Take learning word for example, the pragmatic way to teach the word "English" to students in primary schools is nothing but indoctrinate that it refers to a kind of language, while teach how this word stems and varies from Anglo-Saxon language to students whose major is English Language Study in college. To study fact is like digging the hole for gold, one can only dig the upper level when he is lack of ability and experience, while dig deeper souls
using the more convenient and effective method when he grow older with more capability and equipments. Thus, it would be imprudent to require all the students to memorize facts in the same way.
In addition, when facing high level of education, the word "comprehend" would better replace the word "memorize" in the statement of such an issue. Studying ideas, trends, and concepts is for understanding facts rather than memorizing facts while to memorize facts needs nothing but skill. Considered as one of the most authoritative theory in regularity of memorization, Ebbinghaus curve is the best option for someone who needs to “memorize” facts because all he need to do is to follow that curve and repeat the facts in certain frequency. But a student is supposed to study which means to absorb knowledge and make it part of his ideation rather than to leave those symbols in his mind once for all. And studying ideas, trends, and concepts is through macroscopical and microscopical point of view to understand facts comprehensively and insightfully. Therefore, his knowledge is broadened, his ideation is improved, and most importantly, his analyzing ability is developed.
To sum up, from what I've discussed above, there are diverse methods of studying facts and one of which will be chosen according to the different condition of students. Memorizing facts may somehow help children to study, would be better replaced by understanding facts comprehensively in order to develop an independent and mature mind in upper education level. |
