Issue 130 How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.

The whole community is more focus on the growth of children due to the fact that our children are the future of the society. But whether the destiny of society is only determined by the children’s socialization still need our consideration. At the same time, we have got many effective methods to raise our children to make a better society.

Firstly, the speaker's point that the destiny of our society depends on how the children are socialized. This assertion, I have to say, exaggerates the function of socialization to some extent. The term socialization is used by sociologist to refer to the process of learning one's culture and how to live within it. For the individual, it provides the resources necessary for acting and participating with their society. I have to confess that without socialization children may grow into a wrong way or even an anti-social member, but socialization is only one factor that may influence the children’s contribution to society. And in my opinion, it is not even the most important one. A variety of cases can be cited to illustrate this point. Mother Teresa’s contribution sprang primarily more from her love for the poor than her socialization. Another convincing example is the popular singer Michael Jackson, whose childhood life is almost a nightmare, but he still showed great love and made a huge contribution to the infants and poor children worldwide. And his songs are continually caressing peoples' heart and lead them to make a better place for the entire human race. These examples demonstrate there are many factors that apart from socialization can bring goods for our society.

Next, the speaker's claim that we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society, but the truth is opposite. For about a century years, continued progress are taking place in society. Let alone the improvements of science and technology, we also achieved greatly in politics, culture and human rights. In politics, we showed increasing concerns on peoples' democracy. In cultures, we put more emphasis on the communication between countries. And we're becoming more sensitive, and respectful of, the rights of women, various ethnic and racial groups. Don’t these contributions make by the children of half-century? From this point, the speaker’s view is somewhat perfunctory. However, what we should pay attention to is, despite the progress we made, we still have a long way to go.

In sum, the key determinant to our social destiny and prospect is not only how children are socialized, and it contains many other aspects including raw intelligences, parental influence and personal faith. Meanwhile, our society is steadily evolving into a more civilized, harmonious, and respectful one. In the final analysis, I may safely draw the conclusion that the speaker's claim falls short of persuasiveness.

Let me help you understand the dynamics a little better here.  When you are asking for a PAI, you are asking for a favor from me which normally takes around 30 min and can go longer if your writing is poor in quality. Reading your essay is not as fun as you think – it’s almost like riding on a bumpy road with three flat tires and no seat-belt; and a deep PAI costs me even more efforts than simply providing you with comments. So now I’m asking YOU for a favor to have your essay revised by yourself, by yourself, by your friend, by your friend, before asking me to PAI. I consider this as a respect to my voluntary work and I hope you do so as well. Thank you.

TOPIC: ISSUE138 - "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
WORDS: 521
TIME: 00:45:00
DATE: 2010/8/3 19:35:32

In the statement, the author claims that only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress. Admittedly, almost everyone fears of making mistakes, only by doing correct things can discovery or progress emerged. According to me, although the traditional thought is avoiding mistakes, I still agree with the author's claim that making mistakes are necessary to make discovery or progress.
First of all, one has never made mistakes does not exist in the world. According to our education system, many people believe in "the right answer". We are taught that correct answers are good and erroneous answers are bad. However, how many of us can complete every task perfectly without making any mistake in everyday life. I am afraid the answer is zero. Think about it, the experimental bridges designed by a great engineer may collapse, the commodity sales of a big company may decrease, and a stock broker may lose money accidentally. Do these failures substantiate that the incompetence of them? Above all, everyone, including great person, may make mistakes, what matters is that do they make efforts to correct these mistakes and then get close to the actual truth, so it is unwise to assume that one can make discovery or progress without any failures.
Furthermore, mistake and success come from the same procedure. Thomas J Watson, the founder of IBM, had said that" The way to success is to double your failure rate." Besides that, we can prove the point from a historical depth. Columbus found the new land which he always consider that is India, Tomas Edison knew 1800 materials which can not make a bulb, Einstein spend almost half of his life time to create a theory of everything which are replaced by the Quantum Theory. It is obvious that great theory and discoveries are based on the foundation contains amount of mistakes and errors by many generations of people. No mistakes, no development of science, politics as well as the whole society.
Last but not the least, mistake may spark creative thinking. If we made a mistake, we must realize that this method did not working, then we would find another approach which may turn out to be a new idea. On the contrary, if we always avoid making mistakes, do everything correct, we may remove ourselves from many learning experiences which may turns out to be a try of a new theory, so too much fears of failure may undermine the attempts to generate new ideas. For creative thinkers, mistakes have potential value. The mistake gives the research another direction, at the same time, sparks their creative thinking. To sum up, making mistake is not a block on the way to success. In contrast, sometimes it may generate a new discovery or making a great progress of the society.
In sum, we always consider that failure and success are mutually exclusive; however, the fact is that on the way to discovery or progress, making mistakes are unavoidable.
Making mistakes is not harmful, on the contrary, it is the necessary step to success and it will generate new ideas, which will lead to a new discovery or progress. So I agree that only through mistakes can there be development.

这样写需要;
语言一定要纠结;

Issue 221"The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly differe ...
nieyong 发表于 2010-7-30 06:32

As long as human beings gained ascendency across the earth, people cannot stop studying history so as to help establish a better world. The speaker claims that the notion that people remain unchanged is the chief conclusion of studying history. To a certain extent, I agree with this assertion. However, the speaker overlooks that in some aspects there are remarkable differences between people in different time periods, and they benefit us a lot.

The nature of humanity and the essence of society, our desires and the conflicts, have stayed unchanged on the whole. For instance, Beauty and love are the forever themes across the river of the human civilization, even extreme actions are being taken to fight for them. The Troy War, between Troy and Rome, which lasted for ten years and left their citizens in an abyss of suffering, started only due to the dispute of a beautiful woman named Helen. Not come singly but in pairs, Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 only to marry an American divorcee. The government strongly opposed the marriage, so he chose to give up the power intrepidly. What's more, people have the inherent desire for democracy and freedom; therefore, it's not that weird to have so many insurgences of the poor farmers in the ancient and the hot national liberation movements in the Third World. Having realized upon this stage, we will be more skillful in penetrating people's inner heart and delivering human resources more effectively. The principles manifested can also guide the evolvement of the society.

However, it's equally to rewarding to. At no other time than in our present time has the need for appreciating and analyzing the significant differences between people of different eras been more necessary. In terms of the development of regime and science, with the abolition of slavery and the annihilation of feudalism, democracy and law have become the melody of the new era. Furthermore, hi-tech has changed into the mainstream of our contemporary world. Industrial Revolution is the milestone of the modern times and our way of life is totally different from the primitive ones because of the highly developed technology. History is mirror, through sparks between established conventions and much more enlightened and unique points of view, whether failure or success, we can obtain beneficial experience and have more mature and sophisticated choices against the challenges lying ahead.

On the other hand, via studying shining stars in the galaxy of history of different periods, we are moved and fairly influenced by the excellent giants and mostly the tenacity of their wills. Such as Columbus, the greatest explorer in history, clang tenaciously to his ambition of finding new land even though all the sailors were on the edge of desperation; Dr King, an American activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His intrepidity incurred the extremists' bullets. Though core value of the society has changed over times, and we are little by little losing more and more praisable virtues that our forefathers emphasized, the great pioneers of different eras act as the beacons of our soul, and guide our way of life in accordance to the reality.

In conclusion, although the nature of humanity does remain constant over times, the regime, science and spirits of the society have changed appreciably. Also, the chief benefit of studying history lies mainly in the lessons learnt from history and the established principles we use to guide our directions.

TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's id ...
figuechen 发表于 2010-7-31 00:26

This is nowhere more It is almost [如果后面有however的话这里就不要把作者的观点捧到天上去] true than the assertion that the appearances and behaviors of people reflect part of their attitudes and interests, as well as a society's ideas and values. However, there remain hidden characters of a person or a society that cannot be indicated by appearance and behavior To have a clear insight of a society, we have other paths to follow.

Initially admittedly, the outward characteristics do reveal some of a person's attitudes and interests since appearances and behaviors are determined by his inner emotions and qualities, which have close correlation with one's attitudes towards society. For example, hip-hop singers, such as Jay-Z [最好不要用娱乐圈的人做为例子,GRE作文应该是有阳春白雪之感的,一定要这样举例可以不提名字] are usually dress in baggy clothes and have tattoos on their [Jay-z有几个?] body to show their specific attitudes that they are in pursuit of independent character and disobedience to the mainstream of society. More important, the ideas and values of a society consist of the attitudes and interests of an individual, and therefore the appearances and behaviors of the people mirror a society's ideas. Take gentlemen in Britain for example 。。]. They behave in a polite manner in most circumstances. In this case, their behavior conveys the message that politeness and good manners are pillars of British society. The example fully explains that the ideas and values of a society can somehow be demonstrated by the people’s external characters.

However, as the proverb goes, "Never judge a book by its cover".[引用恰到好处] There are some inner feelings and attitudes which cannot be reflected by the external looks and behaviors of a person. Human beings are capable of disguising themselves, and thus sometimes it might be a person’s desire to determine his appearance and behavior. We may wear suit in a job interview to make the interviewer believe that we hold a serious attitude towards the job. On the other day however, we might be dressed in baggy and leisure clothes to participate in a party. It is our desire to determine the external appearance and behavior in certain circumstances. For example, an American spy in World War II was sent to Germany to initiate his mission. In order to acquire confidence from others, he behaved like an adherent of Nazi. He could even memorize a book written by Hitler. Soon he was appointed a position in the military department in Germany, which indicates that he had successfully misled many Germans by disguising his behavior. In this example, the true appearance and behavior of the spy had been held back according to his desire and therefore it is sometimes unreliable to judge a person from these aspects.

In a not dissimilar way, some of the values and ideas of society cannot be identified by observing the outward characteristics of its people. Foremost, the ideas of some people may not be representative to all the others. We will be misguided if we cannot distinguish the mainstream of society. For example, there are bunches of young people who are dressed in fashionable clothes in China. However, that does not illustrate that all the Chinese people prefer fashionable way of lives. In fact, most Chinese people incline to have traditional life styles. Those young people cannot truly reflect the common situations in China. What's more, the globalization has decreased the disparity of appearance between different groups of people, and it is more difficult to identify the ideas and values from the appearance. Most people in big cities are wearing T-shirt in summer and no one can tell what ideas and values are conveyed in such appearance.

The ideas and values of a society involve various aspects including culture along with the stage of a society. It is presumptuous to judge a person or society completely according to its outward appearance and behavior. An analogy can be drawn with the outward appearance and behavior: the appearances are like the packages and the ideas are the goods inside. [结尾了就不要再展开举例了] The package may reflect some of the characters of the goods inside but you will never know what it really is until you open it.

Sinbad:

The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.

ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

The speaker asserts that the professors of all the subjects in the college and university should be required to work in professions related to what they teach. Aside from some specific academic areas in which practical work is not available for several reasons, I agree that it is helpful for faulty to work outside for both educational status and course content can benefit from the experience.

There exist at least two aspects of reasons that it is beneficial for teaching to let the professors come into close contact with the practical work. In the respect of educational status, it promotes the professors view the course not only from a theoretical point but also from a practical perspective, only by which can they master knowledge generally; it is, therefore, a useful way to increase their teaching status. For example, in the area of economic, a professor who is an employee in a company as well will understand the commodity market better and what commodities or service consumers really entail. Thus, the professors who work outside often have higher educational status.

In the respect of course content, experience in related professions can bring in the newest applications of the course which interest the students for expending their mental horizons. To illustrate this point clearly, here's a case from myself that is very convincing. One of my teachers major in computer science is also a manager in a big computer company, who is one of our favorite teachers due to the fact that not only he passes us on professional knowledge, but also share with us what he has undergone during the development of the new products with his group. What is also worth noticing is that students can accept advice of the current job market from those teachers who are familiar with it. Like some high-tech fields, such as computer science, have been developing so fast that instruction always lags behind application. Without teachers who work outside and keep up with the step of times development, graduates would find that the technology the have learned had been eliminated from the market for a long time. Therefore, teachers who work outside will enrich the teaching content and make the course more popular.

However, important as working experience may be, is it necessary for teachers in each area to work outside? I guess the answer is no. With respect to the feasibility of the proposition, not all courses can ferret out its related profession. For example, which profession is for teacher who majors in literature studying Shakespeare? A book seller? With respect to the necessity of the proposal, even if you find an appropriate job for every teacher, too much outside work will distract them from their regular work, and therefore, has a profoundly harmful influence on the quality of teaching. Teachers will place too much emphasis on their jobs instead of their students and researches. Thus, overstating the practical work will lose more than gain.

In sum, I agree that it is worthwhile to require faculties to work outside in the similar professions except several academic areas in order to enrich the teaching content and improve the teaching status. Moreover, together with a multitude of ways according to the varying conditions the quality of instruction can truly be enhanced.

查韦氏“to socialize”意思是“to fit  or train for a social environment ”

TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

Children, one of the most crucial integral parts of the human beings, are always the centre of the attention of the whole society, not only because children is such that they needs constant care and protection, but also because time will make the salt of the society out of them.

Clearly, whoever is devoting his/her heart and soul to the future of the society, was bound to have went through his/her childhood, having received some education, more or less, so there is no denying that what kind of a future generation these children will become, determines what kind of a society they will create. Some maintain that the destiny of the future lies in the degree to which the children are socialized. Currently some children are still taught about some acknowledged virtues, such as fortitude, prudence and justice to fit into the society--the stage of life, while young as they are, some children's minds are polluted by some sorts of deadly sins, such as lust, avarice and vanity to edge themselves into the society through a nasty way ; however, it is often the case that it is at least as, if not more, easy for the children growing with negative guidance, as for those with a positive outlook of  the world, to be accepted by the society, that is, to be well "socialized". However, the future of the society, shaped by the "socialized" but evil generation, is inevitably gloomy. Therefore, whether how children are socialized facilitates the progress of the society or not, is up to how we define the word "socialized". Children who are truly socialized are trained for the positive part of the society and able to reform the negative part, and therefore work as the pillar of the society.

Admittedly, how children are socialized, to some extent, influences the construction of the society, but considerable knowledge, as the fundament of their thoughts; the optimistic philosophy of life, as the direction of their goals; and the social conscience, as the principles of their behaviors, etc., together master the destiny of the society. Even in some cases, whether a person is socialized makes little difference to one’s contributions to a society. Some maverick geniuses fail to communicate properly with others, and some of their perspectives are not well accepted by the society; however, the contributions they've made to the society are incomparable. Thus, it is little wonder that there appeared people, like Van Gogh and Thoreau, whose works were valueless in their time, while now their works are the most valuable treasures in the human history.

Therefore, the key to the bright future of the society is to raise children who can make contributions to the society, however socialized they are. It is true that there are still many flaws in the education system and in the education methods of parents. Commendably, the schools make measures to optimize the arrangement of the courses and reform the forms of admission exams. Moreover, though some stale ideas remain in their mind, parents attempt to improve education methods according to their own childhood experience. It is a progressing cycle from generation to generation. Besides, the children take part in part-time jobs, activities, and voluntary work to make up for what the schools and parents fail to teach to them. It is not uncommon to find their figures in the eco-friendly activities, technology creativity competitions, and beneficent campaigns. No one can deny that their effort accelerates the development of the society.

There is no flawless standard to judge the methods of education. What we can do is to keep facing in the right direction, improving the methods, cultivating everyone’s potential, and therefore children, as well as the rest of human beings are sure to bring about a brighter society.

TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
WORDS: 474
TIME: 01:34:18
DATE: 2010/7/22 23:51:49

As an old saying goes, "history is the teacher of human live and of politics." The function of history is valuable for human daily lives. The content of study of history should have some value and this value may not be very tightly related to daily lives. In my opinion, considering some examples discussed below which seems far from daily lives have great value, the study of history has value not only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily live.

In old days, history is the best teacher for a prince. No better way than reading history can show them the passion and the interests, the good and bad councils, the right and wrong of events and so on. Likewise, the common persons well settle their minds the principles of morality and know how to make the judgment of the action of men. Analyzing historic people in history, some are heroes which hold up as examples, while some hypocrites go down in history as a symbol of infamy. Chinese children are encouraged to learn from one little boy named Kong Rong who at the age of four could yield the bigger pears. The spirit of respect to others was passed on from generation to generation by this historic boy. Hence, history could be our soul guidance.

Aside from soul guidance, the study of history prevents repeating the past mistakes. Just as the old saying goes, "Once bitten, twice shy." A myriad of mistakes happened in history, but the wheel of history should never turn back. The setting off of the first atom bomb over Hiroshima brought serious disasters to human warns us that we should not abuse the nuclear weapon again. The subprime-loan crisis which threatens the economy worldwide had given us an impression lesson. Hence, history promotes the society move in the onward and upward direction and progress can be achieved.

However, theory studies and technological researches are beyond ordinary lives, but they have great value in long term. For example, although the history of an ancient society does not interrupt ordinary person does daily live, it has value to the study of history and indirectly affect human live. It may show us a fairy tale or it may be proved to be the origin of some cultures. Another example is the history of science. Every science has history. The studies of earth, sun, and the cosmos are far beyond daily lives, and record and study from history help researches. Hence, history colorful our lives and helps doing researches and human may use the result to create endless new things.

All together, history has great value to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives and that is far beyond daily lives. Aside from making our lives more colorful, and helping do researches, history has endless function that I can list here.

Issue149
The most practical and effective way to protect wilderness areas is to attract more tourists to these areas through environmentally sensitive projects.

Viewpoints:
+ help obtain financial support to these areas and draw a wider concern about the protection of the wild scenery here.
- cause problems for the city and its service system, crowed, traffic jams, raise house prices
- need to be managed, run out of control, attract too many projects of investment in industry or real estate, do not have enough force to protect the vulnerable environment from too many tourists and business affairs.

Text:
I agree with the speaker insofar as that the way of attracting more tourists to wilderness areas through some environmentally sensitive projects to protect the environment there is practial and effective. However, a contrary view would reveal a neglect about the harmful effects the program may bring about in terms of overcrowding, losing control on travel industry and some related problems, which is also where my mainly points of contention with the speaker lie.

Admittedly, for some wilderness areas, the plan of providing more people with envirionmentally friendly travels has many positive effects on both the environment and the tourists travelled there. Tourism, as a result of extensive publicity conducted among travellers on the wild beauty, would  bring profits and investment for the local government and its residents. With these funds, people and the government are enable to execute projects on protecting or rehabilitate the natural environment. Moreover, tourists can in return share the beautiful scenery and keep relaxed with less damage to the nature. Cities like that can be found all over the world. And as a city depends almost completely on tourist trade, Sanya, a famous city in Hainan province of China, has few industrial plants but a huge amount of luxury hotels and comfortable little villas for tourists. Local people in Sanya live a life of ease and enough income the tourism brought about, along with the government being happy to raise much fund distributing to the environmental conservation with nearly little burden of other industries, if any. Therefore, from this point of view, it could be a promising way of environmental conservation to carry out environmentally friendly projects .

Aside from its utility on obtaining financial support, however, the environmentally sensitive programs may cause numorous troubles for the government and organizations concerning more about the quality of local life and the nature, especially in those areas with relatively small acreage. As those long-term troubles accompanying the development of society and economy in some giant metropolises such as Moscow, Beijing, Mexico City, etc, small towns widely known for their tourism and natural beauty might also experience problems such as traffic jams, excessive population, pollution and unsufficient public service originally provided for far less people. Although the government would take measures to prevent the damage to the nature, overcrowding might still pose a severe threat to the vulnerable wilderness lands. Thus, local inhabitants would probably end up living a life more distracted by travellers and being able to do nothing to save the evironment.

Besides, things might run out of control over these tourism related industries. Indisputably, business people general value the profitability over many other aspects of projects and thus would to some extent congregate in places that they think they can gain profits. And with the popularity and people’s attention, wilderness areas which attracts travellers more willing to hand over their money to purchase the leisure time and happy mode will be prefect places for a large amount of merchants to invest their money and lauch their businesses in the name of attracting more people. Furthermore, in order to decrease the cost of transportation, companies might build their own factories or purchase some property there and obtain local raw materials, which would sometimes result in environmental deterioration or extensive damage to the natural resources. Accordingly, tourism should be reasonably managed under control.

In sum, without environmentally sensitive projects to attract tourists, people would hardly find enough money on protecting the wilderness areas. However, without certain means to control over the negatives effects of dense population and growing attention, natural environment would be harmed more badly. Thus, if we could not come up with ideas to take measures to control the market under a certain level, it would be better just to leave the wilderness alone.

153.Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.

Whether students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study instead of accepting it passively depends primarily on specific academic fields and the extent of skepticism. With respects to subjects in which skepticism is appropriate, I strongly agree with the statement; students could gain a lot when they are thinking critically on what they are taught.

As a threshold matter, the statement requires two qualifications. First, in certain academic areas where there is nothing to be skeptical. This is especially true in language study; after all, what to be critical is there in grammar? Secondly, the statement fails to consider that excessive skepticism is likely to makes it difficult for students to understand what they are taught, especially for those who are still young. After all, as for question ‘why one plus one is two’ which is the most famous question of Goldbach’s conjecture, it is far beyond a child’s ability to solve this big mathematic problem in number theory.

Aside from these two qualifications, it is rewarding for students to think critically instead of passively accept what they study about. There are three benefits to do so.

First and foremost, for students, skepticism helps them understand what they are taught well and makes it easier for knowledge digestion. Just as Karl Max said, ‘you must doubt about everything’. Critical thinking may brings us the ability of innovation and invention, which companies values high currently. Also, skepticism could raise interest on certain areas of students, which may promote them to pursue research as their career. There is no denying that a majority of scientists today find their interests in research through skepticism. Moreover, skepticism may pave the way for further study or academic progress on specific areas. History is ample with instances like this. With doubts about Aristotle’s theory of gravity, Galileo did the famous experiment of gravity on the top floor of leaning tower of Pisa and then basically disproved Aristotle’s former theory, which can be seen as giant progress in physical history.

Second, for teachers, if one’s students question frequently, he or she will know students’ weakness which they have not mastered well on study like the back of his or her hand. It can not only help students solve the problem by asking teaches but also gain teaching experience for teachers as well. And on the other hand, teachers can benefit from these questions, which is especially true in doing research. Students’ spark ideas may help teachers find new solutions on certain problems.

Last but not least, for scientific or national improvement, no matter what grade a student is, and no matter how old a student is, he or she has the right to be skeptical on what are taught; even those classical rules and theories. Without skepticism of the very few scientists who are brave enough to counter with authorities at that time, we human beings might still have been in belief that our earth is the centre of universe. And for law students, their skepticism about federal systems may eventually help law reforms.

In sum, aside from two qualification mentioned above, students should keep a skepticism on what they study. In this way, students can not only benefit themselves but also teachers or even make big improvement for human beings.

ISSUE56 - "Governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future."

Should leaderships focus more on tackling with the pressing issues than solving the expected problems in the future? I find this proposition has great merit in several facets which would be explained as follow.
Firstly, before discussing this proposition, we should clarify a prerequisite, that is, the function of a government. What should a government focus on, the buoyant political achievements or otherwise the trivial but pressing problems regarding its people? In my observation, a government should put the benefits of general populace first. They contain the construction of infrastructure, the assurance of health care, the higher living standard and even the solutions of environmental pollution.
As far as I concerned, it is safe to say that effective disposal of pressing matters is the fundamental to any anticipated plan in the future. We cannot be hasty to initiate a new chapter before we carefully complete the significant issues which have already existed. It is similar to the old but never old-fashioned truth that one incapable of walking can hardly learn to run. And these societal issues mentioned above are the immediate problems referred by the author and have everything to do with demotic interests. They are those of vital for every government. They are the first step before learning to run. For example, the government of a developed country could not gain alien investment and develop its economy if the country is filled with riots and conflicts. The immediate task for this nation amounts to queering the conflicts and ensuring its people’s safety.
In any democratic country, actually, a politician or a government cannot obtain approval unless they sincerely tackle with the immediate problems which are connected with the demotic interests. Could a president succeed or excel in his or her presidency while leaving these demotic benefits of the entire society behind agenda? Could he or she pay close attention on the intricate diplomatic relationship rather than the problems regarding domestic economic development and people's living condition without any criticism?  My answer is no. A government or a party which omits the realistic problems would inevitably loss the confidence and supports from general public. For example, when president Obama and his party decide to implement the health care's reform, they anticipate the glory of a magnificent feat. However, they suffered the imaginable fiasco. The contributors include several facets such as the opposition from the Congress and the obstruction from the previous beneficiaries like Insurance Companies. Nevertheless, the most fatal factor is that the American general populace is satisfied with the existing health care system and they insist that the government should pay attention on more realistic troubles like environmental problems or the severe employment situation.
In sum, I completely agree with the proposition that the realistic problems should come first, because the efficient and perfect achievement on immediate problems which is closed to the public can stabilize the society and accelerate its prosperity. And all the governors should remember that classic sentence: Rome was not built in a day.

issue147. “Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.”
Word: 444
Many people think that tradition and modernization are incompatible in our lives and this is true in many situations where tradition meets the challenge of modernization. But I definitely believe that they are compatible and substantiate each other if we deal with the relation between them.

Undoubtedly, it is so common to see modernization challenge tradition that we can not deal with it. When we spend more and more time on television and computer, our traditional communication with our relatives have lost gradually; when we eat fast foods in KFC, we almost forget our traditional foods like noodles and spring-circles; when we are more and more familiar with Christmas and Valentines’ day, we have forgotten there is a traditional festival named NIAN when our family get together and a memorization called QIXI when boys and girls listen to each other in China. Modernization makes us lose so much and the worse thing is we are adapting to this kind of losing. Therefore it is not strange that more and more people refuse modernization for the losing tradition.

However, this is not always the fact and we can be modern without losing our tradition only if we give a proper definition to tradition and modernization. In my opinion, tradition, as a symbol of society, is a kind of perception in mind; while modernization, as an indication of modern world, is more like a kind of life styles. When we think or behave, we obey the traditional ways. In China, we prefer relationship to individualism because our ancestors tell us that we belong to our family not ourselves. We do our best to help others in order to seek after peaceful world in heart, for helping others is our responsibility in society. These thoughts and behaviors are from our inner heart and can not be changed even though we live in another world because they have rooted in our body. On the contrary, modernization is an external life style. No one today can refuse ready-made foods, internet or modern transportation, which have been indispensible in our lives and we have to admit it is because of them that our life become easy and relaxed. So what we can do is to enjoy the facilities modernization brings to us.

To conclude, in modern society, modernization has been part of our lives which we can not refuse, meanwhile we should recognize that no matter when and where we are and what we do, our minds are full of traditional values and morals which we can not lose either. Therefore, the circumstances that tradition and modernization are incompatible will be less and less if we deal with them appropriately.
