"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Should all faculty be obliged to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses that they teach for the purpose to improve the quality of instruction and university level? Admittedly, it is essential for some faculty to do so. However, I disagree with the statement insofar because it overstates the importance of working outside the academic world.

First and foremost, it is indispensable that the world is changing every moment, with the rapid pace of technological advancement and academic progress, knowledge contained in the published textbooks often lags behind the trends of the time. In addition, as a prominent leader Martin Luther King once put it, "The purpose of education is the preservation and enhancement of knowledge and the development of character within our given form of society which will best prepare the individual for the conditions of extreme novelty the near future is bringing." Follows from that, teachers' goal of education to their students also needs to accords with it. In fact, practical working experience surely will expand their horizons and bring some newest information to students. Without actively engaging in their field, it is difficult for them to learn up to date knowledge and achieve fresh insights. Education is a lifelong enterprise, so in this sense, working outside the academic world in the faculty's fields is crucial.

Aside from the advantages above, it is worthwhile for some college faculty to work in professional fields relevant they teach based on the following two benefits. On one hand, practical working experience in the non-academic world relevant to their major will improve their understanding of their own teaching courses. On the other hand, students in the college always wish to obtain something related to their future career. If their teachers can share experience of working outside they will go into raptures. Since working experience puts college faculty in a better position to help students design a more practical career planning. It can help a large number of students have a clean realization about how to do in the future.

Despite the merits above, however, I can not totally agree the speaker's statement because all faculty need to engage in the work outside relevant to their teaching courses is open to doubt. It is not feasible and necessary to do so. As far as the feasibility and necessity, the speaker neglects a fact that some faculty in professions are rarely find the job outside the academic world. After all, some professions seldom exist due to the market's not demanded. For example, maths and history teachers need not work in non-academic world because society does not offer the relevant working position. Besides, people might focus more concern on their academic results rather than something else. Thus sheer working in the academic field is enough. Also, redundant outside work may do harm to instruction at the college and university level.

From analysis above, I concede the certain academic areas in which work is beneficial to increase of quality of instruction level. Yet working in the academic field in colleges and unversities is of its importance. We should seek a balance and take all-sided consideration about the issue.

Issue 221"The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."
the speaker overlooks that in some aspects there are remarkable differences between people in different time periods, and they benefit us a lot.
1.         The nature of humanity and the essence of society, our desires and the conflicts, have stayed unchanged on the whole.  Troy War  Edward VIII
2.        it's equally to rewarding to appreciate and analysis the significant differences between people of different eras.(新旧制度科技发展给人类的启示)
3.        via studying shining stars in the galaxy of history of different periods, we are moved and fairly influenced by the excellent giants and mostly the tenacity of their wills.

As long as human beings gained ascendency across the earth, people cannot stop studying history so as to help establish a better world. The speaker claims that the notion that people remain unchanged is the chief conclusion of studying history. To a certain extent, I agree with this assertion. However, the speaker overlooks that in some aspects there are remarkable differences between people in different time periods, and they benefit us a lot.

The nature of humanity and the essence of society, our desires and the conflicts, have stayed unchanged on the whole. For instance, Beauty and love are the forever themes across the river of the human civilization, even extreme actions are being taken to fight for them. The Troy War, between Troy and Rome, which lasted for ten years and left their citizens in an abyss of suffering, started only due to the dispute of a beautiful woman named Helen. Not come singly but in pairs, Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 only to marry an American divorcee. The government strongly opposed the marriage, so he chose to give up the power intrepidly. What's more, people have the inherent desire for democracy and freedom; therefore, it's not that weird to have so many insurgences of the poor farmers in the ancient and the hot national liberation movements in the Third World. Having realized upon this stage, we will be more skillful in penetrating people's inner heart and delivering human resources more effectively. The principles manifested can also guide the evolvement of the society.

However, it's equally to rewarding to. At no other time than in our present time has the need for appreciating and analyzing the significant differences between people of different eras been more necessary. In terms of the development of regime and science, with the abolition of slavery and the annihilation of feudalism, democracy and law have become the melody of the new era. Furthermore, hi-tech has changed into the mainstream of our contemporary world. Industrial Revolution is the milestone of the modern times and our way of life is totally different from the primitive ones because of the highly developed technology. History is mirror, through sparks between established conventions and much more enlightened and unique points of view, whether failure or success, we can obtain beneficial experience and have more mature and sophisticated choices against the challenges lying ahead.

On the other hand, via studying shining stars in the galaxy of history of different periods, we are moved and fairly influenced by the excellent giants and mostly the tenacity of their wills. Such as Columbus, the greatest explorer in history, clang tenaciously to his ambition of finding new land even though all the sailors were on the edge of desperation; Dr King, an American activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His intrepidity incurred the extremists' bullets. Though core value of the society has changed over times, and we are little by little losing more and more praisable virtues that our forefathers emphasized, the great pioneers of different eras act as the beacons of our soul, and guide our way of life in accordance to the reality.

In conclusion, although the nature of humanity does remain constant over times, the regime, science and spirits of the society have changed appreciably. Also, the chief benefit of studying history lies mainly in the lessons learnt from history and the established principles we use to guide our directions.

TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 668
TIME: 00:50:00
DATE: 2010-7-26 11:02:06

This is nowhere more true than the assertion that the appearances and behaviors of people reflect part of their attitudes and interests, as well as a society's ideas and values. However, there remain hidden characters of a person or a society that cannot be indicated by appearance and behavior. To have a clear insight of a society, we have other paths to follow.

Initially, the outward characteristics do reveal some of a person's attitudes and interests since appearances and behaviors are determined by his inner emotions and qualities, which have close correlation with one's attitudes towards society. For example, hip-hop singers, such as Jay-Z are usually dress in baggy clothes and have tattoos on their body to show their specific attitudes that they are in pursuit of independent character and disobedience to the mainstream of society. More important, the ideas and values of a society consist of the attitudes and interests of an individual, and therefore the appearances and behaviors of the people mirror a society's ideas. Take gentlemen in Britain for example. They behave in a polite manner in most circumstances. In this case, their behavior conveys the message that politeness and good manners are pillars of British society. The example fully explains that the ideas and values of a society can somehow be demonstrated by the people’s external characters.

However, as the proverb goes, "Never judge a book by its cover". There are some inner feelings and attitudes which cannot be reflected by the external looks and behaviors of a person. Human beings are capable of disguising themselves, and thus sometimes it might be a person’s desire to determine his appearance and behavior. We may wear suit in a job interview to make the interviewer believe that we hold a serious attitude towards the job. On the other day however, we might be dressed in baggy and leisure clothes to participate in a party. It is our desire to determine the external appearance and behavior in certain circumstances. For example, an American spy in World War II was sent to Germany to initiate his mission. In order to acquire confidence from others, he behaved like an adherent of Nazi. He could even memorize a book written by Hitler. Soon he was appointed a position in the military department in Germany, which indicates that he had successfully misled many Germans by disguising his behavior. In this example, the true appearance and behavior of the spy had been held back according to his desire and therefore it is sometimes unreliable to judge a person from these aspects.

In a not dissimilar way, some of the values and ideas of society cannot be identified by observing the outward characteristics of its people. Foremost, the ideas of some people may not be representative to all the others. We will be misguided if we cannot distinguish the mainstream of society. For example, there are bunches of young people who are dressed in fashionable clothes in China. However, that does not illustrate that all the Chinese people prefer fashionable way of lives. In fact, most Chinese people incline to have traditional life styles. Those young people cannot truly reflect the common situations in China. What's more, the globalization has decreased the disparity of appearance between different groups of people, and it is more difficult to identify the ideas and values from the appearance. Most people in big cities are wearing T-shirt in summer and no one can tell what ideas and values are conveyed in such appearance.

The ideas and values of a society involve various aspects including culture along with the stage of a society. It is presumptuous to judge a person or society completely according to its outward appearance and behavior. An analogy can be drawn with the outward appearance and behavior: the appearances are like the packages and the ideas are the goods inside. The package may reflect some of the characters of the goods inside but you will never know what it really is until you open it.

TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
WORDS: 382
TIME: 00:45:00

According to the statement above, it seems that people are conferred on with the duty of obeying some laws while disobeying others. As far as I am concerned, however, as an established system, laws have relatively objective regulations of their own. The chief function of laws is to seek for a selective solution between conflicting interests. Therefore, it's not so reasonable to judge or change laws with individual viewpoint.

First of all, it is virtually unrealistic to define a piece of law as just or unjust. The definitions are not only involved in personal interests and experiences, but also limited by certain situations and cultural customs. For instance, the issue of homosexuality has been hotly argued for over 10 years without a clear conclusion. Some people consider the permission of homosexuality as respect to personal volition and freedom, while the opponents condemn it as an immoral trait and call for legal prohibition and severe penalty. Correspondingly, in some states of America homosexual marriages are admitted by laws, whereas in many other states homosexuals may be arrested for their announcements of sexual tendency. Neither side of the debate persuades its opponent because the solid different of their interests, experience and ways of thinking. In this case, we can more or less catch the impossibility of giving a universal judgment to even one sort of law, let alone thousands of other laws.

Secondly, the stable of society will be inevitably undermined due to the validation of the author's statement. With the first justification of personal violation of a sort of law, there must be the second, the third...and at last people have to suffer the worst chaos caused by the lack of definitive threshold to limit one's behavior. The overwhelming of personal freedom and justice will ironically deprive more people’s rights. What if a murder is exempted from his guilt because he regarded the verdict was unjust? What if a judge explains legislations as he pleased? Is it literally a disaster to the concept of justice?

Finally, I sincerely concede the existence of defeats and deficiency of laws, but it is not to say that laws should be modified directly by individuals. For the sake of long-term stability, amendment of laws should be conducted step by step. Admittedly, to appeal for and guard pertinent official departments to correct errors is a steady method. Only with the help of organized instigation and widespread surveys, can innovation guarantee the interests of most people.

In conclusion, despite of the debates over depicts and incompleteness of the contemporary laws, it's unlikely to be judged or even changed by personal matters, which is both unreasonable and dangerous. On the other hand, people can turn to legitimated methods for firm and save improvements. Only with patience and tolerance can the fairness and justice of society progress in a steady way that assures civilians rights to the utmost.

TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
WORDS: 542          TIME: 00:58:40          DATE: 2010/8/1 13:28:10

The author seems to offer a reasonable point of view that one should obey just laws and disobey unjust laws. However, this statement overlooks two issues while in the first phrase, the author fails to categorize any law as either just or unjust and in the second phrase, the author neglects the harm it would bring if one disobeys laws no matter just or unjust.

In the context of all the proposed, we need to distinguish the just laws and unjust laws. But whether a law is just or unjust, it is rarely a straightforward issue. Firstly, the fairness of any law depends on one's personal value system and sometimes hard to reach an agreement. Consider, for example, the controversial issue of euthanasia. Individuals with particular religious beliefs tend to view laws allowing hospital to give a euthanasia to the dyings us unjust, while individuals with other value systems might view such laws as just. Secondly, the fairness of a law also depends on personal interests. It happens often that somebody shout to a law which doesn't meet their own needs. He/she would probably think inequitable of the laws which bring damage to him or herself while at the same time brings benefit to many more people in the society. In this case should one person disobey the laws that he or she thinks them unjust? In short, chances are that disobeying laws would bring plenty of troubles while individuals are unable to judge a law in a right way.

And to the government, which is a department administrating citizens through the laws. The only reason for people put trust in it is the confidence in the law's fairness. Thus, however, if the law which is recognized as an authority of the whole can't ensure the obedience of everyone, thus everyone resists it and then everyone becomes used to resisting them, not to mention the social harm. Just like that there is one thing the government put wrong on it, it would make civilians hold no brief for the other things the government has done while those things may not be bad. So it is not a simple thing to just disobey something wrong even it is really unreasonable because a minor may lead to confusion in many other parts even implicated in a number of the innocences. As a result there comes a chaos in total.

What's more, as an individual, revolting laws would bring harm to him or herself in a large part, after all, it is our own country's forces that protecting the laws. In modern society, to protect people through the way of using laws, it is the responsibility of judges, legislatures and judicial officials. To listen to the masses' voice and find the ill-formed rules then amend isn't the citizens' job. Obviously it is unfitted to put this great responsibility on the normals. What government dose is rarely finding out the unjust laws and rules, what is more significant is to figure out better solutions which can't be reached by the latter’s simply disobeying.

To sum, a stable society should be a collectivity that has specialization and cooperation, and each performs his or her own functions. After all, not all the people understand the true just, and simple rude never solve the problems

Issue64“Many people know how to attain success, but few know how to make the best use of it."

Success, which is a lifelong dream o ...

Success, which is a lifelong dream of many people, means not only the attainment of wealth, favor or eminence, but also a desired state of mind,  which plays a vitally important role after one gets fame and fortune. While the way to success is well known by many in nowadays society, few people know what to do with success after the achievement of achieving it.

In this world of competitions where everyone wants to be the winner, people have learned various ways to attain success. There is no denying the fact that the longing for fame and fortune has always been the unfailing [这个词是查出来的?] motivation for seeking personal triumph. Parents tell their children to work hard and never give up when chasing their dreams. Successful men write books instructing people that perseverance combined with energy are the ingredients of success in life. Therefore in our society, there are lots of people winning and trying to win winners and ones working toward so, armed with their wildest dreams and the energy needed to realize them. Apparently, most of them know the golden rule of success and the key to achieve it.

Unfortunately, however, a distorted conception of success, which identifies success with fame and fortune, is becoming a prevailing opinion among people in our society. After all, eminence and wealth are what one first and directly get after the achievement of success. And many successful people thus arbitrarily hold that, with fame and fortune in their hands, they have already reached the peak of life and as a result, they get lost under the shadow of success. Newspapers and TV programs are filled up with successful politicians who ruined their career by taking bribe or having an affair. And there are once successful businessmen who waste their success by spending large amounts of money on luxuries or even getting indulged in gambling. These people, though seemingly "successful" in their early life, actually ruined their achievements by not taking good advantage of them. And success, when unfortunately taken as ultimate target, leads only to stagnancy or even failure. [very well written!]

In a sense, it's how to make the best of success rather than how to succeed that actually counts in one's whole entire life. After all, based on the true meaning of success, what really matter are the ideas and discoveries encountered on the way to the goal, which are the imperative factors leading to the attainment of a higher goal for the future. As a case in point, Yuan Longping attained great success when he developed the first hybrid rice varieties that provided a robust food source in high famine risk areas in Africa, America, and Asia. After being titled "the Father of Hybrid Rice", Yuan has never stopped his research and now he is working on "the Super Rice", which yields 30% higher than common rice. Knowing how to make the best of his success, Yuan attained lifelong achievement in his career. This fully illustrates the significance of making the best of one's success--by setting up a higher goal for the future, one can make endless progress.

To sum up, knowing how to realize his dreams makes a man successful; knowing how to make the best of success makes a man keep moving forward and achieve success one after another. And that's what success, of which fame and fortune are only by-products, is all about.

First and foremost[如果要说first and foremost,那么下面几段就是理由2,理由3,但必须说的是一个意思。 所以应该这样写:admittedly, doing research outside of Ivory tower can replenish the faculty members with the most up-to-date information in this ever-changing world(诸如此类)], it is indispensable that the world is changing every moment,[用句号] with the rapid pace of technological advancement and academic progress, knowledge contained in the published textbooks often lags behind the trends of the time. Aside from the advantages above, it is worthwhile for some college faculty to work in professional fields relevant they teach based on the following two benefits. On one hand, practical working experience in the non-academic world relevant to their major will improve their understanding of their own teaching courses.

The speaker claims that how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society, with which I can just fundamentally agree. In my view, how children are socialized today do play an important role for the future of society, however, that is just one aspect of education which is in fact the most decisive factor for the development of society. As for the statement that we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society, it will collapse by itself since facts speaker louder than words.
To start with, I admit that without good socialization of children, the destiny of society will be in danger. As we all know, society is a collection of relationships between individuals. And relationships is an association between two or more people, which may take place in a great variety of contexts, such as family, friends, work, clubs, neighbourhood and so on. The socialization of children includes providing them with the skills and habits necessary for participating within their own society. However, if children can not be socialized well, their association between people will be limited to family and school only. Without all kinds of relationships between individuals, an uncompleted society can hardly develop well. Also, the normal development of individual will be uncompleted, since a great part of individual development can only be realized in society.
However, though the future of society would be in danger without good socialization of children, it is far from the only factor that determines the destiny of society. In fact, it is merely one aspect of education, which is the process that society deliberately transmits accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another. Children are all naive and ignorant at first. Through a comprehensive education, they can become responsible, thoughtful, and enterprising citizens who will help bring about a better society. While failling education or uncompleted education will produce worthless sorts or even criminals who endanger society. For example, if a child was well socialized but did not have a correct value, it is very likely that he or she will do something that endangers the society. Therefore, it is the whole education of children determines the future of society, and socialization of children is merely an important part of that.
Besides, I strongly oppose to the author's statement that we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society, which exaggerates the shortcomings of present education and severely ignores the fact. The fact is that the human society is vapidly developing thanks to the contribution of many outstanding individuals and the efforts of numerous civilians. For example, one of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Mother Teresa, who devoted her whole life to advocating for the poor and helpless, certainly has helped bring about a better society. Though I admit that the present education is not perfect in that it could not be specificly designed to meet the individual needs and many people on earth can not receive an adequate education even today. Therefore, maybe we can not train all the children on earth to become someone who can help bring about a better society, but this kind of individuals do exist everywhere on earth.
In conclusion, we should pour more resources into the improvement and spread of education, including the socialization of children, since it plays a so significant role in the development of society. Thus, more and more responsible, thoughtful, and enterprising citizens will be produced and our society will consequentially become better and better.

TOPIC: ISSUE37 - "In most societies, competition generally has more of a negative than a positive effect."
WORDS: 388
TIME: 01:50:40
DATE: 2010/8/2 0:07:32

It has been long known that in this era of information and technology, the majority of people are gradually become forced to encounter various opportunities as well as challenges which made it more often for peoples, companyies, enterprises and also factories to face competitions with each other. Therefore it comes no surprise to discover the reality that controversaries arouse of two contradicting opinions held by those who consider competitions as opportunities and those who stands on the opposite side.
There exists,as no one may doubt, that countless entities everyday fighting for ,even a little bit, more chance to enlarge their conpetence in order to obtain a brighter future. Adolf Hitler once said(as I paraphased):A solider who is not looking forward to be a sergeant is never to be a good one.Every single person on earth have the eagerness to strive for a better position in the enviroment he or she lives. Thus competition tend to be unavoidable and necessary for the whole social enviroment. It may easily drw us a conclusion from some highly competitive nationalized and prosperious cities as Tokyo in Japan,New York City in USA and Shanghai in China that consumers are enjoying an increasing number of commodities, luxuries, digital products as well as various kinds of services the city provides at high qualities and unbelievable relatively low prices.Meanwhile, competitions among companies are the most effective ways to prevent monopolies to be formed and what's more worth to consider is that as long as several enterprises compete against each other, they tend to need more staffs to enlarge the power of their own. That's to say,on the other hand, competition lowers the unemployment rate which consequently leads to an increase in consumer price index that reflects the average standard of living.
Admittedly, dispite the fact that competition itself contributes a lot in stablizing the whole society. It still bring about one or more problems that remain unsolved.Thins begin to come out of the water when wo focuse on the other aspect that some side effects of competition that can hardly be neglected.Dishonesty and shrinking profit may be the two major and foremost issue to wait for our viable solutions.
To cut a long story short,as optimism to vast majority of people, what invariably happens is competition do from time to time act as a positive signal to most of the contemporary societies so long as we tackle with the two opposite sides properly.
