In the current universities, faculty always act as a teacher in the campus while get employment in professions relevant to the fields they study. This phenomenon has formed a new developing pattern for the university. However, this trend generates some advantageous effect whether to universities, to faculty or to students on the whole.

What’s the purpose we study in the university? For the most students, they receive the courses to get some job skills or gain practical experience, not to grasp nothing more than the theory or be proficient in some job skills popular ten-year ago. As a guide, faulty should be familiar with his field, follow the current trend of technology and solve students’ questions about the courses. For instance, our teacher who tought us programming language meanwhile working for a software company, she was used to help us to establish knowledge system and decide the direction of our learning through introducing us advanced technology and the latest information in this profession, furthermore, she adopted a new course of C++ programming language which was more and more widely used in the recent years instead of the course of VB programming language which was remained in the teaching program but going out of favor.

Not only can this pattern be beneficial to faculty to lead the learning direction of the students, but it may also improve teachers’ performance—or rather, giving classes by combining with faculty’s practical experience makes courses easier and benefits students to master the key points of theory and skills. After all, university is more than a school but a micro-society to us where we must master practical skills to sustain our lives rather than to grasp sophisticated algorithms yet can’t to write an available program. Moreover, this pattern also funds researches under university, being sure to foster continued innovation and hence forms a virtuous circle.

But this is not absolute, given that a specific practicing experience is not necessary to some studies such as algorithm optimization, professors—who devote themselves to pure research—should not to be required to work outside academic world—they’d rather aim at those interesting studies than spend energy on these meaningless works within the limited time—theory what they study produces more value than the income that they gain from the companies.

to the majority of faculty, their pedagogical tasks are not just to focus on explaining theoretic knowledge, but to pass on their experience and expand students’ horizon—it is better to call them “guide” than “teacher”. Thus, an guide who stay current on new trends and technologies is always better than a teacher with an armful of textbooks.
