ISSUE28 - "Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."

With the development of the society, humans' knowledge has accumulated to a large amount, and nowadays there is a fierce debate about whether it is rational for students to study ideals, trends and concepts before they memorize the facts. The author thinks so and he also points out that learning only facts is of little value. Though sometimes this assertion seems impractical, I agree with it after all.
To begin with, the real goal of study, as far as I'm concerned, is to understand the true principles of the world, however only remembering the facts is unlikely to attend it. In my opinion, the facts only tell us what the functions are and what true phenomenon we will see, but the meaning hidden beneath them is unrevealed. For instance, we can never realize the power of the famous function " E=MC2", unless we have studied the ideals and concepts Einstein had built to achieve his function. American famous physicist Feynman once said "I am so astonished to find out that the Brazil students cannot answer the fairly familiar phenomenon in life while they remember facts so quickly." I think what he said has indicated that there are no guarantee for us to apply the facts to everyday life merely by memorizing them without studying the ideas, trends, and concepts behind them. So remembering is one thing, understanding is another.
On the other hand, the process of remembering the facts without little ideal behind them is extremely boring. As we all know, interest is the best teacher motivating us to learn. The assemblage of bold facts will never appeal to us and the learning is somewhat reducing to the process of
remembering the right order of a string of disturbed letters, so memorizing the bare facts is no good for us and in a long run, will lead to a reluctant atmosphere among students. In that time, the only remaining ability, memorizing and reciting, will lose.

Nevertheless, to some extent, the menaces of learning aren’t decided by students themselves. Paradoxical, it’s up to the society, the educational system. Where the exams exist, the true learning never achieves. The criterion for an eminent student is the high grades he has obtained, which hasn't been exaggerated, but the truth in the campus. And sometimes when you hunt for jobs after graduating, the interviewers will also demand you to show you grades in school. So we students are forced to learn for high marks, thus naturally bearing the facts by heart is the best way for us to become more competitive.
Secondly, however, some basic facts is needed for us to go further. we can never expect ourselves to learn from demonstrating 1+1=2, and it is not practicable for us to kwon all the ideas, trends and concepts behind the facts within the limited life span,
so first we must remember some fundamental facts to utilize in the following studying, which always occurs in the primitive learning process.

In short, remembering facts has nothing to do with understanding the truism about the world; students should study the general ideals, concepts and trends behind the facts before memorizing them if time allows. In the meanwhile, society and educational systems should take measures to prevent learning process deteriorate into the morass of pursuing of fame and gain.
