Issue153 “students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.”
As it comes to whether the students should question or just accept what they are taught by the teacher, admittedly certain skepticism is essential in education, however, I can’t agree totally with the statement because that question everything they’re taught might bring some drawbacks, while strike a balance between skepticism and acceptation is the best way in learning.
There is no denying that skepticism to a certain extent is an essential part of education. Firstly, the knowledge keeps on modifying or even taken place by new ideas as the human has advancing and deepen understanding of the world.
If just obtain knowledge from the teacher without applying judgment, the student won’t be able to find truth of the question. Secondly, questioning what are taught often breeds new problem and new discovery. As a matter of fact, the advances and progresses of our society depend on these new problem and new thoughts. Consider, for example, Galilei who is hailed as the “father of modern science” gave a denial to the theory of velocity of Aristotle. Finally, being skeptic to some knowledge will do favor for student to cultivate their way of thinking and solve new problems they are faced. It is by being skeptic with ideas from the teacher that offer the student a chance to think thoroughly of a question, hence they will perform better when they’re confronted with new problems.
Despite the merits of the statement, however, I disagree with the statement because it seems to recommend that students should bring skepticism to everything they study. In fact, extraordinary skepticism will bring debasing impact on the study about basic knowledge. For one thing, if a student question all about the basic knowledge, he or she might trapped in low efficiency of learning and even more importantly, he or she might not take the basic knowledge seriously, which will be a nightmare for them when they go further in study because found base of basic knowledge is essential in study. For another, being skepticism to the whole might exert an undesirable influence on the personality of students.
A student always question about all the things might not be a good team worker and find it hard to adapt to the society.
From the analysis made above, I concede that questioning while studying is important. Nevertheless, exorbitantly emphasizing the skepticism of students will breed a counterproductive and dire consequence. As far as I can see,
to strike a balance between questioning and accepting is better for student to gain ability for a
promising future.
