TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

The argument recommends that in the next mayoral election people should elect Ann Green, for she can solve the environmental problems in Clearview. To support this recommendation the author claims that the Ann Green is a member of Good Earth Coalition and other evidence. However, the argument contains several logical flaws.
First of all, Ann Green is a member of Good Earth Coalition, yet this doesn't mean she can do well in the environment protection. As we know, many organizations in the society a just cheat money, not real helps people and improve the life level. Without the obvious proof, we don't know what the aim of the Good Earth Coalition is; it is entirely possible that the organization’s aim is destroy the world. Yet, assume that the Good Earth Coalition helps to protect the environment, being a member, doesn't mean she can does well as a mayor of Clearview, as we know, the environmental problems are just one part of the many obligation of mayor. There are no evidences that indicate she can do well as a mayor.
Secondly, the author infers that the town council doesn’t protect the environment from the unconvinced data that the factories are doubled and the patients in the hospital are 25 percent more.
As we know, as the development of technology, some device and reduce and even eliminate the pollution, it is entirely, possible that all of the new factories are equips these devices to reduce the pollution. Moreover, as we know, the respiratory illness are relate with climate beside the pollution. Without obvious evidence, it is possible that the illness is induced by the complex climate.
Finally, assume the town council don't protect environment. While, the author don't think Frank Braun can protect the environment, he/she reason this conclusion from that the contemporary town council are not
protecting environment, as the member of them,
Frank Braun are not protect environment too. Yet, there are no evidence to indicate this, it is possible that he against the decision of the town council.
In sum, the author reason from the unconvinced evidences. To bolster Ann is better than Frank being the mayor, the author should give more information about the pollution, Ann and Frank, and which one support to protect environment, and which one can achieve the tasks of mayor. |
