130. "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

Undoubtedly, it is true that the destiny of society is highly related to how children are socialized today. However determines a society's destiny is not only determined by it, but also relevant to other important qualities, which, in my view, might be even more important than socialization. Values such as skepticism and innovation and so on are core lessons in the way to achieve a better society. And I agree the claim that we have not yet learned how to educate children the method to build a better society.
First and foremost, the term socialization is used by socialists, social psychologists and educationalists to refer to the process of learning one's society and how to live within it. In this sense, socialization degree of children is amount to how they know about the society and the ability for them to integrate into it. Socialization is a particular behavior of human, which can be used to separate human beings from animals. In addition, everyone in the society should learn to obey social rules that must be restricted one's own behavior that only through this can maintain the society. As Freud once said ( and I paraphrase):" Socialization is individuals learn to control impulse of human nature, like put beasts into cages." Why socialization degree is related to the destiny of society? Children today are the pillars of society in the future, so what will the society be like is controlled under them. A child is socialized highly is more likely to cooperate with others than one with lower socialization degree, since he/she behaves more tolerant, and that is the fundament of cooperation. Cooperation serves to make the world more harmonious and try lots of people's best to create more can improve human's lives. Besides, he/she has many characteristics that meets the need of development of a society. A man is highly socialized means he can do more for society. Conversely, he may do little for it. Hence how children are socialized today is relevant to the destiny society.
However, I hold another view different from the speaker's. Children's socialization degree is not the only factor that leads to the destiny of society. As we all know , skepticism is credited with its effort brought to the constant progress of human being. History is full of examples of people who challenged what they had been told even authoritative knowledge, thus paving the way for social progress. Take Galileo as an example. Facing the prevailing notions about the theory of velocity from Aristotle, who is authoritative in the eyes of everybody, Galileo behaved great braveness to challenge Aristotle's theory, at last proved Galileo was right. Galileo's reject of what he had been taught provides strong support that skepticism is beneficial to social progress. Another character should also take account into determining the destiny of society. Innovation is we can fly in the sky; we can wonder in the moon; we can travel under water. These are due to innovation, so society can be more convenient than before. In sum, values such as skepticism and innovation are also core lessons in building a better society.
Considering the speaker's second claim, to judge if we have learned to teach children to develop a better society, it is essential to figure out what a “better society” is. From the view of me, a better society means a society with no more wars, no more poverty, no more sadness. However, since we adults can not prevent these happen, how we can raise our children to develop a better society. The society is filled with quarrels and misunderstandings everyday, is of many people starving to death. Insufficient lands, limited resources and economic depression make the society less safe. Facing these, we adults indeed have not founded effective methods to deal with. So how can we teach our children?
From analysis above, in some extent I concede that socialization degree of children plays a crucial role in the development of society. However, it is neither the only factor nor the most important one can determine the destiny of our society. Aside from this, as a matter of fact, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.
