130. How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.


I strongly disagree with the two statements of the speaker. The one indicates that the way of socialization of children is unilateral and there must be other factors that will influence the destiny of society. While the next statement claims the worry that we can not raise and teach our children to help bring about a better society which can be poorly supported by empirical evidence.

First, I agree that the socialization of children is a very important element to enhance the development of our society. Children are the future of our country and via socialization, they can learn how to live, how to communicate and how to study. For example, when children communicate with their tutors in school, they can get access to the advanced minds; when children get along with their classmates appropriately, they can learn the good habit of talking or walking; when they exchange ideas with parents at home, they can study some life experiences or social skills. All the good things children learned via the process of socialization can help the society to develop.

However, how children are socialized is not the only factor that determines the destiny of the society, honesty and trustworthiness play a large part in daily life. In this society, honesty and trustworthiness are far more important than anything else to determine the destiny of society because only man who is of the quality of honesty can be trusted by others and in the same way, the prerequisite of understanding and cooperating is to observe the principle of trustworthiness. Only in this way, our society can be developed on the right track. If children form a bad habit when they are young such as lying to parents, cheating in the examination or even do a fraudulent business, I forecast the destiny of our society we can see is only darkness while no brightness.

Second, aiming at the next statement, if we define “a better society” as “a society that we can cooperate with each other, we can respect each other, we can value every single person’s right”, and now, there exists a fact that children are much more sensitive to realize that to help others and respect others’ rights is what they should do because teenagers are now receiving new minds everyday, then I have the confidence to say that we completely have the ability to raise and teach our children to bring about a better society. In modern society, there are so many evidences or facts that can prove my opinion, such as the former Soviet Union cooperated with the United States of America to finish the construction of the space station in 1970s; excellent scientists get together to study the formation of DNA and want to find a way to cure deadly disease such as AIDS; and nowadays people can respect minority’s legal rights, for instance, they begin to admit and respect the rights of homosexuality. These samples can all reflect that we have the capacity to teach our children to help bring about a better society.

In sum, when referring to the destiny of society, we should consider more aspects such as cooperation or honesty than just the socialization of children, because combination of all aspects can help our society to develop. Maybe some people have different definitions about “a better society”, however, in my opinion, when we define it as “a society that we respect everyone and cooperate with each other”, we are fully confident to use strong existing evidences to educate our children and raise them to help bring a better society.
