1、"We can usually learn much morefrom people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict ourown; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."
(0) when people disagree with one another, stress aregenerated. If the two opposite sides are more interested in other minor aspectsinstead of the issue itself or if they are improperly behaved, stress couldbring about crashes. It is true that one usually does not have the patient to listento persons whose thoughts are dramatically opposite. But for people with a modestmind and respect to people holding different opinions, a debate could behelpful in promoting understandings and broad horizons.
(1) Tensions in whichmany people may lose an objected view are usually caused by a heated debate. Peoplemay concern more about the shame of being silly rather than the nature of theissue. Being prejudiced, some people are declined to admit the validity of theother side. And even if they have to acknowledge their failure, they havelittle favorable impression on the conclusion. For issues that have no correctanswers such as religious beliefs, disagreements may divide the arguers intoopposite groups. If not properly controlled, they may calumniate each other andeven fight against each other, not to mention understanding or respect. Such asthe religious wars between countries in Germany before her unity.
(2) However, prejudicesand conflicts are merely one side of the results of tension. Those undesirableare caused by one or more sides’ poor control of temper or ill behavior. Ormore probably the two sides are struggling for their incompatible sakes onwhich debate have little effect. When the two sides exchange information andideas on the basis of respect to each other, the communications would besuccessful.
(3) Disagreementsinform us angles that would otherwise be omitted to view the topics underdebate. Though contention help build a looking of unity and most people like totalk to people at the same side, immersed in the atmosphere of contention onebecome numb, reinforcing the rooted ideas again and again. And thus may becomehesitate to move forward. Fresh ideas from disagreements can stimulate people fromself-appreciation. On the other hand, one becomes sharp at the points of hisown as well as the structure of his own logic. And through a peaceful processof picking up errors and defending, for technical issues two sides holding disparateopinions draw more near the truth, and for social issues the process wouldincrease understanding, which helps a great deal to avoid unnecessaryconflictions. In the U.N., where international negotiations are made under thepressure of most of countries in the world, regulations have been made tomaintain peace for sensitive affairs. And then we come to the point that it isnot disagreement that inhibits learning. The troubles are the selfish mind toignore other people or nations’ behalves and the reluctance to acknowledgepeople our faults.
(4)In sum, disagreement could impede learning only at some conditions. For twomodest sides, disagreement could serve as a motivation to learn. Even thoughtalking to the opposite side could bring about stress, if studied carefully andjustifiably, disagreements are beneficial in improving our thoughts sharply andeffectively, which agreement could help little. |
