TOPIC: ISSUE3 - "It is more importantto allocate money for immediate, existing social problems than to spend it onlong-term research that might help future generations."
It has long been a controversial issue onwhether to allocate money for existing social problems or long-term researchthat might help future generations. While some people may incline to givepriority to the former, in my opinion, since the crucial and indispensable roleboth of them played in our society, any preference would be presumptuous.
Few people would doubt the importance ofsolving the immediate and existing social problems. Without eliminating of thelong-held racial discrimination and racial segregation, our society would stillin a great upheaval; Without removing the epidemic disease as SARS and BirdsFlu, we would still live under extreme panic and distress; Furthermore, neglectingthe social problems can result to dire consequences. An apt illustration mightbe the Financial Crisis in 2008. The institutions’ failing in spotting and correcting theemerging weaknesses in the financial system, one feds a global speculative bubble in real estate and equities, which served to reinforce the risky lending practices, resulted in a tremendous recession and a nightmare of the global economic. Ashistory informs, detecting and solving the existing social problems are crucialto attain a stable and harmonious society.
However, some problems, if I were to ask someexamples, as the crimes, fatal diseases, and the exhausting resources, whichhave long been existed are still haunting around us. It seems that progress ishard to gain by only concerning about the immediate results instead of combiningwith long-term researches. Admittedly, strict punishment might be a choice ofstruggling against criminals, yet long-term research in redressing andperfecting the education and social systems is needed to prevent crimes;Limited consuming might help to alleviate resource exhaustion, yet long-termresearch in the exploration of new energy as wind, solar and nuclear energy arethe resolution we need to remove such troubles. What’s more, on the way offighting against disease and virus, further researches in biology, medicine, chemistry and other areas are of absolute necessary. With continual studies, wecan see a promising future of discovery the cure for congenital disease, AIDS,and deficits in genes. It is long- term research, which only contribute to theexpansion of humanity’s intellectual assets but also breakthrough some caliberin problem resolving.
In conclusion, while realizing the importanceof solving immediate, existing social problems is undeniable, we should notneglect that it is the long-term, continual research in different areas thatserve to discover, to remove and to prevent difficulties. |
