The author asserts that all faculty should spend some time teaching the courses which are relevant to their profession outside the academic world to improve the quality of instruction of the college and university. To some extent, from my standpoint, the claim is agreeable and reasonable. My reasons are following:
First, the faculty will tell students why he engages in this field. Studying in certain field means to choose to devote his life to the field without complaint and regret. The teacher will express his love for his field, the specialty of the area, his feeling when he first initiated the knowledge and what impelled him to go in for the field, and his contagious excitement when he solves some difficulty problems. These above will attract students’ mind and push some of them into the field, following his teacher’s path.
Secondly, the faculty will come to class with fresh insights of the issue at hand which students may never hear of before. The fresh viewpoint for the area could increase students’ interest for this area. The old saying, interest is the best teacher. The interest will drive students into the ocean of knowledge to search the answer to the mysterious problems. In the ocean, Students will endeavor to explore a totally new way to solve the problems. Many scientists, such as Einstein, Edison, believe it is the interest that promotes the research in one field. And the fresh viewpoints tell them the advance in this field, what predecessors have already done and what they haven’t done yet, which are waiting for them.
Thirdly, by keeping abreast with the changing demands of work as a professional, professors can help students who are serious about pursuing a career in that field to make more informed career decisions. If a student wants to be a doctor, the professors can give him the direction to be an excellent doctor, telling him what is necessary for being a doctor, what skill is required to master, which kind of medical books are beneficial for a medical student to grow up, the trend of modern medicine. Students who are willing to apply for medical college will obtain the information they are eager for, and the standard of medical college, which provide a huge help in his career decision.
Finally, the experience of teaching also might help the professor ferret out the cutting-edge and controversial issues, which may be appropriate subjects for research and publication. Teaching benefits teachers as well as students. The teacher also attains amount of original and absolutely new ideas during the process of directing students as well as the students get. In the class, there may be a debate between the professor and students focusing on an issue which the professor may take it as granted and never seriously think the reason. So the argument can inspire the professor and spur him to reach a higher level.
However, not all the faculties are fit for spending time in teaching. The teachers in some disciplines such as mathematics, literature, history, philosophy, etc., may find it difficult to combine their teaching with relevant professional fields, because the area they focus on is too abstract to understand for the students who just enter this area. A mathematician whose research emphasizes on one branch of Discrete mathematics is not suitable for teaching students, for almost no one can understand totally his theory in that class except himself. The course is useless for the students who are short of fundamental theory of mathematics at present.
In conclusion, the faculties spend time in teaching the courses relevant to their profession is favorable to the instruction of college and university, nevertheless, some kind of faculties are not suitable for teaching at the beginning. They should be the supplement with students having learned the basic theory. This will generate the positive effect for students’ career development.
