【题目】issue112
"Some educational systems emphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benefit more from an education that also taught them to explore their own emotions."
同意作者观点.教育不应该偏重智商,而应该是两者都要兼顾。

正文:
We are not born with high intelligence quotient (IQ), but neither are we born with great emotional quotient (EQ). It is education that shows us the way to attain them. Perhaps nothing, however, is more controversial in the domain of education than the debate over which is will benefit students more between the capacity for reasoning and logical thinking and the ability to explore their own emotions. I, to some extent, like the speaker, am inclined to the view that educational system should establish a balance between educating intelligence and emotions.
For decades, lots of emphasis has been put on reasoning and logical thinking, namely, intelligence quotient (IQ). IQ includes aspects of mathematic, spatial learning, verbal, logical reasoning, and memory. This intelligence could predict a significant degree of performances and some degree of personal and professional success. However, some people with fabulous IQ scores are doing poorly in their life. They somehow are wasting their potential by thinking, behaving and communicating in a way that hinders their chance to success. There is something missing in the success equation. This missing part in the success equation is EQ, that is to say, the ability to explore their own emotions.
The capacity to express one’s emotion naturedly fully and precisely is very important in our society nowadays. Education of emotion could inspire one’s interest in developing of IQ and it, actually, in this way, help people fulfill their true potential. Take creativity as a example, Having a high EQ gives a person more courage to try new things and go to new place. Most people with high EQ are very creative people; they are not afraid of sharing their ideas or their thoughts. Although people with high EQ don’t usually have the highest grades, they are more than likely more creative than other children. With great creativity, as the old saying goes, “Curiosity is the mother of invention”, people will find it easy to be successful.
Nowadays, the current educational systems overemphasize the development of students’ capacity for reasoning and logical thinking while for the most part ignoring their emotional intelligence. This undoubtedly results in serious problem such as lack of inspiration, creativity, or aspiration. This can be aptly exemplified and illustrated by the cases of school shooting in US in recent years. Most murders, college student still, kill people simply because of some accidents, complain or envy which make them uncomfortable. It is entirely possible to avoid such terrible and awful tragedy by other way, such as talking with their friends, seek help from school, if they have been taught how to explore their own emotions.
To sum up, while we may emphasize one aspect of education we shouldn’t completely ignore other aspect. |
