Issue Outline:
203"The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men
and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines."
1.The definition of character of a society: common features of the masses, but not the minority's
heroic behaviors.(My Position)
2.In most of the cases, Heros mentally represent the expectation or ideal model for public. As a
result, great men always detach the masses and their distinguished characteristics are much far
from common persons' extention.
For instance, Albert Einstein's academic theories can be fully understood by few
contemporaries. This convinces us to conclude that the society's understanding is undermined than
Einstein's.
3.It's the public, formed by every single ordinary person, creates the diverse society.
4.Some Heros/Heroines aren't competent at their roles as examples.
59"Too much emphasis is placed on role models. Instead of copying others, people should learn to
think and act independently and thus make the choices that are best for them."
1. Duplication can help us to understand others, independently operation can evoke our
innovations.(My Perspective)
2.We don't have to reject copying actions. Role models can show us the best way to be success.
3.More efforts have to be put into personalized actions. Figure out the most suitable way which
may probebly lead us to our targets.
4.Esteem your idols but don't have blind faith in them.
138"Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
1.Mistakes may provoke great inventions or bring in progress.
2.Obey the standard laws, mostly happened in the repetitive fields likewise production line,
result in less risk but no innovations. Alteration is the only route turning towards discovery or
progress, even sometimes result in mistakes.
3.It doesn't mean simple errors are acceptable. We have to avoid some apparently mistakes.
4.It is the mistake, judged by contemporaries, proved to be truth later.

Argument Outline:
1. The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain
of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are
highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in
Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running
shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed
five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and
aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers:
Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which
emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."
1.One store is probable enough for Plainsville.
2.The prosperous phenomenens of health club and training classes don't essential means the people
participated in lacking of shoes and exercise clothing. Even they need to buy some sprot's
products, it hasn't been proved that Nature's Way's store is their choices.
3.Service quality may be the key for the stores in Plainsville be most profitable. So, building
more stores can't benefit for the company.

213The following appeared in a memorandum from the owner of Armchair Video, a chain of video
rental stores
"Because of declining profits, we must reduce operating expenses at Armchair Video's ten video
rental stores. Raising prices is not a good option, since we are famous for our special bargains.
Instead, we should reduce our operating hours. Last month our store in downtown Marston reduced
its hours by closing at 6:00 P.M. rather than 9:00 P.M. and reduced its overall inventory by no
longer stocking any film released more than two years ago. Since we have received very few
customer complaints about these new policies, we should now adopt them at all other Armchair
Video stores as our best strategies for improving profits."
1.Few custmoer complaints don't equal to no complaints. It's most likely that many clients have
words to this policy but don't express or known by stores' workers.
2.Reducing expenditure is a choice to raise profits slightly but not the way
to improve the interest for a company.
3.Just one month seems too short to arrival a persuasive conclusion.

234The following appeared in a newspaper feature story.
"There is now evidence that the relaxed manner of living in small towns promotes better health
and greater longevity than does the hectic pace of life in big cities. Businesses in the small
town of Leeville report fewer days of sick leave taken by individual workers than do businesses
in the nearby large city of Mason City. Furthermore, Leeville has only one physician for its one
thousand residents, but in Mason City the proportion of physicians to residents is five times as
high. And the average age of Leeville residents is significantly higher than that of Mason City
residents. These findings suggest that people seeking longer and healthier lives should consider
moving to small communities."
1.The number of physicians couldn't illustrate the life state and quality in the area.
2.Some other aspects, but not the communities' size, may give attrivutes to the longer and
healthier lives for the people in Leeville.
