208"The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

I agree with the statement basically insofar as how people dress and act can reveal their attitudes and interests. However, the appearance and behavior of people has no necessary connection with a sociaty’s idea and value. It is influenced by complex factors.


It might be tempting to agree with the speaker on the basis that the look, dress,and the outward appearance of people usually reflect their ideas, attitudes and value. A sociaty whose numbers prefer fashion and expensive clothing might indicate a preference for spending rather than saving. For example, Now York is in big diffence with Washton D.C. And, a society whose numbers prefer to wear clothing traditonal is one that values traditional over modernization.


On the other hand,there two compelling arguments that the sociaty’s ideas and values do no deal with the appearance and behavior of people.
One such argument is that people usual cover their values and what they are thinking, especially in some important situation like nogotiations, congresses and other similar situations. And in some other respacts, how people dress, look and act are not controled by themselves. For example, Workers have to be on uniform when they are working .


A second argument against the speaker’s opnion has to do with other factors influence appearance and behavior. For example, the people live in africa go with few clothes because of the climate of the tropical where is hot and dry. And the women in some area , where often encounter dust storms, go out with a piece of acarf are not because of religion. A more persuasive evidence is that a soldier have to wear clothes with the color close to trees avoiding exposuring himself.


     To sum up, while the statement has merit, it amounts to an one-side generalization. The attitudes and values reflected by numbers of complex factors including look,dress,act,climate,customs and habits etc.
