Issue 77: In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries.

I fundamentally agree with the speaker that in some fields of inquiry, important discoveries are more likely made by the beginner than expert. Nevertheless, the beginner’s ability or potential should not be overrated. After all, those experts,
equipped with numerous knowledge, are often more professional and sophisticated than beginners in their own fields.

To start with, sometimes the beginner might have an obvious advantage over expert in making important discoveries because they can easily enjoy the freedom of thinking and act without the constraint of traditional concept and conventional way of thinking. As a result, it is more possible for them to break the routine and figure out certain creative ways to achieve specific attainments.

This phenomenon is noticeably displayed in the field of art and literature. New writers and artists can invariably create more impressive and popular work for the public than those more professional ones. The reason is that as beginners, they can always observe and meditate their life from very different and novel perspective so that a whole new style can be easily formed which is critical for either a writer or a artist.

Moreover, despite the merit of the beginners’ creativity is apparent, this advantage is significantly undermined when the continuity and inheritance of knowledge are taken into account. Clearly, those experts can undoubtedly do better in this aspect for a vast number of knowledge have been accumulated in their mind through longtime working and studying.

People can seldom make their achievement without such substantial basic knowledge. Even those beginners who have made some breakthrough must have a deep understanding of their own field, otherwise, their valuable imagination would only become sort of illusion and the impact of their creativity would also be diminished. Thus, armed with powerful storage of knowledge, the experts can always achieve better performance than beginners. For instance, economists can never accurately predict the trend of global economy without thorough comprehension of diverse economical theories; chemists would not be able to compile the periodic table of elements without the grasp of numerous chemical principles; futhermore, few historic remains would be discovered and appreciated without the apply of history, archeology, geology and anthropology. All these discoveries could not easily made by beginners, but by experts who earn a profound background of their own fields.

Last but not least, we have to be conscious that there are still certain fields in which are pretty difficulty for beginners to make any discoveries, because adequate accumulation of experience and first-hand reference data are the necessary characteristics. However, it is just the experience and sufficient data that beginners primarily lack of, but what the experts mainly featured. Taking astronomy as an example, only by observing the orbiting of celestial bodies year in year out and repeatedly analyzing innumberable datum can astronomers figure out the regular pattern they are searching for. Think about those fresh researchers who have just stepped into the field, how can they easily make more important discoveries than experts without longtime observation and analysis.

In conclusion, dispite those limited breakthrough made by beginners in some fields, their abilities should not be overrated. I am still inclined to claim that most of the important discoveries were made by experts because of their extensive knowledge and abundant experience.
