题目:ISSUE73 - "In most professions and academic fields, imagination is more important than knowledge."
In the statement, the author claims that imagination is more important than knowledge in most professions and academic fields. As far as I am concerned, I concede that imagination is quite important for research and inventions, but knowledge can't be ignored at the same time. It is hard to say which one is more important, because both positive and negative effects of having only one of them call for a balance in which there are both imagination and knowledge for one who is in his professions and academic fields.
To begin with, imagination is one of the most valuable qualities in research or study. It is the beginning of creations and calls up inspirations which may help break up bottlenecks in almost every field. It is also imagination that pushes the original inventions which have a crucial place in the contemporary society.
For example, airplanes, submarines and many other inventions which take good use of bionics are all to some extent benefit from imagination. With the habit of imagination, the scientists see what we can use from the animals. It is hard to believe in the past days that human beings can fly one day, but if you are free to imagine, what can’t you do?
Simply put, without imagination, one may be restrained onto a settled path and hardly jump out the assumptions and theories we have already known, like human kind are not able to fly. It is sure that there will be no news comes up from this kind of searching mode.
However, on the other hand, imagination alone can't lead to success. Placing so much emphasis on imagination that lead to a decrease on the supposed concern on knowledge is detrimental. Without any background knowledge, imagination is just fantasies and can't be brought into realism. After all, imagination is serving for the improvements and complements of knowledge and may just shows up occasionally. What we call as creations are the things that can be utilized and effective in the real world. This means that we need a practical knowledge to make every valuable imaginary idea come to life and fits for its purpose.
When creating an advertisement, the admen have to be extremely familiar with the basic knowledge of the product and target market as well as the way to communicate with the consumers. Or else, they may just led by their excellent imagination to a distort way and at last go to nowhere for the consumers do not even understand their appeal points.
At last, imagination and knowledge is compatible with each other. Calling a balance between them is exactly what we should do. That means ignoring the importance of knowledge, which guarantees the correct direction of imagination, is unrealistic. It is basic knowledge that fulfills the requirement of a better work for imagination.
In conclusion, over concentrating on either imagination or knowledge alone is not sufficient for academic research, because imagination and knowledge are actually complementary to each other. On one hand, people will fall into daydreaming with only imagination; on the other hand, new knowledge can hardly be found without imagine beyond the existed knowledge. Thus, our research necessities imagination, knowledge is equally important.
