TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

The recommendation, as the statement claims, is reasonable to some extent. As our community is growing more intricate and complicated, it would be convenient for most people to judge others by the appearance and out-looking, for barely most of us like to assess someone strange by delving into his interior world. Nevertheless, such assertion would not be necessary to establish gauges on neither understanding of the attitudes and interests of everybody, nor of the ideas and values of a society. In order to get a rounded conception about persons we contact and the world we live, we should give consideration to other critical elements.

Since the industrialization took place three hundred years ago, the social division has come to be a mainstream notion in the social development. At the very commencement of the Industry Age, as the advents of steam engine and semi-automatic production process, it was the first time that working class appeared as a indispensible constitution of the society, and the hammer and wrench the workers usually carried gradually developed into the symbols of the relevant groups and organizations, which lied at the worker's side to protect their benefits and struggle for better treatments. Besides the fledging conception to comprehend people's attitudes and interests, the modern society reflects a stronger trend which not only calls for attention to people's appearance, but appeal to the growing social division as well. The group of students are often identified as the uniform and the school badge they wear, the professors in college and university usually take a pair of delicate glasses to display his identification as an erudite, and the successful merchants and politicians intend to decorate the specific deliberately, such as watch, tie, leather shoes, etc, to get honored and estimated as the elites from others.

Moreover, with the assistance of such methods, we find another access to apprehend the ideas and values of the society we observe. In retrospect of history, what Chinese dressed before the opening-up and reform policy established in 1979 makes a contribution to articulate the certain linkage. During that time, especially the chaotic periods of the Cultural Revolution launched by the caucus headed by Jiang Qing(the spouse of Mao Zedong), the appearance of Chinese left impressive pictures to directly draw a precise conclusion about the domestic plight: all clothes were seemed to be monochrome-black, yellow, or green, which is the most popularized color matching with that of PLA(People's Liberation Army)'s uniform, manifesting the mainstream ideology:" accordance of thoughts towards the worship of Chairman Mao", regardless of any humanism solicitude about the individual personality and characteristics, along with few practical solutions to resolve the degenerating economy. Therefore, despite the fear of another impending world war, the exterior voices inclined to express their concerns about the mental condition of the Chinese would whether lead to a collapse of the so called” totalitarian community” or not.

Simply put, the appearance affords us an efficient way to uncover the essential content underlying the superficial level of an individual and the whole society, however, it comes along with the ambiguities and misleads to drive us puzzled and misguided.

Firstly, should it be totally accurate to judge a person's interests and values just relying on the ostensible conditions? Consider the social status as actor and politician, the subsequent answer definitely leaps out of the term of "agreement". Once on the stage, the actor immediately converts himself into another person to unfold an exceptional story, the famous comedian Charles Chaplin, for instance, acted “the great dictator” to restore the figure of Adolf Hitler in a ridiculous way, meanwhile advocated the significance of democracy and freedom off screen. As for politicians, the 100% honesty would bring about disastrous impacts upon the way being a qualified leader, even for the primitive heralds of democratic election in ancient Greece and Rome, their decent and noble out-looking, might draw the notorious comments as the "disguise of their shady affairs". Additionally, now that the values and interests cannot be expressed by appearance precisely, why do not we choose other options to realize the same purpose? There are other alternatives, such as the religious rituals, ethnic wedding ceremonies, lesser-known language, providing vivid perspectives to draw a rounded conclusion.

In sum, the optical sentiment focusing on the appearance cannot be regarded as the arbitrary judgment of the essential contents of the individual and society, the correlation between the outside and the inside needs more ponders and endeavors to be well recognized.
