TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.

"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

The argument is well-formed, but not well-reasoned. The arguer advocates that the residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green rather than Frank Braun, based on the conclusion that the Clearview town council is responsible for the environment declining, which is demonstrated through a series of statistics of factory, air pollution and patients of hospital during last year. Though the evidences put forward is true and trustworthy, there are still a few flaws weakening the validation of the argument.

First of all, the assumption that Clearview town council is not protecting the environment is lack of evidences. Though the arguer put forward some statistics, such as the number of factories , air pollution levels
and the number of local patients , should Clearview town council really take the responsibility for the deteriorating environment? Because the arguer doesn't give any information about the position and function of Clearview town council in the government, perhaps it holds an side position and has no real power to make decisions.
Or, perhaps it is an non-government organization who wish to protect the environment but just don't know how to do it. If it is the case, voting for Frank Braun will help with the environment level indeed.

Moreover, granted that Clearview town council is reluctant to protect the environment in Clearview, it doesn't mean that Frank Braun agrees with the policy with Clearview town council. As the arguer fails to take the situation of Frank Braun into argument, the possibility is not excluded that Frank Braun is an environmentalist who wants to take measures to improving the environmental quality here and also the image of Clearview town council in public, and that is why he participates in mayoral election. If it is true, voting for Frank Braun may be a wise choice for Clearview.

Further more, conceding that Frank Braun is a conventionalist in Clearview town council who doesn't care about the environment, it also lack factors to prove that Ann Green of Good Earth Coalition will solve the environmental problems in Clearview and thereby should be elected to mayor. What if Ann Green and Good Earth Coalition both only concern with the economic level regardless of the environment? Perhaps the problems in Clearview will get worse rather than be solved. Or, even if Ann Green of Good Earth Coalition is willing to improve the environment, does he has the capacity and resolution to do so? All the electors should consider these questions carefully before they make a decision.

Admittedly, environment is now becoming the most important issue that affects everyone’s daily life and calls for everyone’s attention. Therefore, the residents of Clearview who wants to solve the environmental problems and improve the environment level should still know more about the two candidates, such as their ability on government, policy focus and so on, thus can they be responsible to the environment of Clearview.
