ISSUE 120.
"So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present." 一点灵感都没有 写了一下午 o(︶︿︶)o
At the beginning, I firmly disagree with the speaker's opinion raised in the issuue which oversimplify the relation between the past and present. The issue contains an important but confusing time relation and the sophisticated meaning of guidance. Though it is not be an easy job, I'd like to try to demonstrate my perspective on this issue that the understanding of the past does guide the present.
The first step is to unravel the definition of "guidance". Guidance refers to the help or advice that is given to someone, especially given by the authority. Simply, mother tells a son that vegetables are good for health, which is a case of guidance on his diet and health. It is the flow of wisdom from one part with more experience to another with less. It concerns with the accumulation of experience in certain field, the essence of which lies on time. Then the second step to understand the relation between past and present in terms of time. The state of continuity and coherence is exactly the thing, which means there is no interval between them and time changes the past into the present. Consequently, past represents the part with affluent experience while present is so new that such circumstance brings about guidance. Therefore, as time makes a difference between old and new, mature and naïve, people study the past, lesson from the past and can't help seeking for guidance from the past, especially in the blindly new fields.
Besides the certainty of the existence of guidance, the value of it manifests in all-round aspects of society. Summarizing of these are spiritual and material fields:
The more the world is fraught with all kinds of the galloping development in material, the more obvious and substantial the public is and should be guided by the thoughts and believes grown from the past in spirit. Nowadays people get more apt to suck in the overwhelming material world then lost, the absence of believe and principles attributes to it. In light of this, most people seek for the help of religion lasting for thousands of years which make them feel like a return to the origin and human nature. This fact can explain partly why the number of China’s Christian members has increased significantly during the past 5 years and the total number of the world Christian increased by 12 percent at the same time. Also, the fade on studying Chinese tradition classics around the world is another example to prove the importance of guidance from the past. The Confucius Institution has reached a number of more than 300 over 80 countries.
Moreover, though in the material world the guidance of the past is not as significant as in other aspect, we still should not ignore or deny it in some specific fields. The success of Shenzhou V manned spaceship depends on the lessons and experiences through the study the history of the Space Technology Development during 30 years. Also, computer is a new-born industry emerging in the late 1970s, but the idea guided through the whole process has already existed in 1614 when John Napier said he invented a compact tool for calculating, and was completed by many people and thereby became reality. And, the techknowledge and technique to create Internet, the most complex net in the world, have been developing since 1960s from a military net called ARPAnet during the Cold war. Therefore, it can’t be clearer that the guidance from the past helps the globe to become prosperous and flourishing.
In sum, as I understand the issue, there is even no necessary to discuss whether the past have value to guide the present, because every one and every study needs guidance which absolutely won’t come from the future. No body can put forward to an example that something is developing all on itself without any help from outside or the existing factors. Therefore, I assert it again that the understanding of the past does guide the present. |
