should studentsbring a certain skepticism to everything they are taught, as the authorasserts? Admittedly, students should hold a skeptical attitude in the learningprocess instead of passive acceptance. However, I fundamentally disagree withthe statement for the reason that it overstates the importance of questioning.
To begin with, there is no escaping the fact thatquestioning plays a very significant role in education. Firstly, questioning willfacilitate the student's personal development and the teacher's instruction. Onthe one hand, bringing a certain skepticism in the learning process is anrepresentation of the strongly desire for obtaining knowledge and finding thetruth of questions .Obviously, in the process of finding the true answers, studentswill make a deeper impression in their mind of what they have learned On theother hand, the various questions from students will definitely promote theteacher's profound thinking about problems. Therefore, teachers may realizewhat they need to improve and they will immerge themselves in efforts to impartmore rigorous and reasonable knowledge to students.
Furthermore, skepticism can help to boost thedevelopment of society. As a matter of fact, new ideas and new questions oftenderive from questioning .Undoubtedly, the advances and progresses of oursociety depend on the emergence of new question and new discoveries. Forexample, Einstein put forward theory of relativity whichindicates the deficiency of the classic mechanics; Galileo gave a denial to thetheory of velocity of Aristotle; William Harvey, who refuted the theories ofGalen and discovered the circulation of the blood. Additionally, questioningis central in many fields in our society because it causes us to hesitatebefore acting and figure out more rigorous methods. For instance, in law, politicsand ethics, where very vital decisions are made that often determine someone'slife, questioning is essential to motivate a more reasonable and rigorous wayof solving problems .To those people who engage in scientific researches ,it iscommon that they will ignore some mistakes or procedures while conductingscientific research activities. By accepting the questions from other people, theywill improve their experimental work with the result that make a greatcontribution to the technological advancement.
Despite the merits of the statement, however,I disagree with the statement because it seems to imply that students shouldbring skepticism to everything they are taught. With regard to the students, educationshould encourage them to question and criticize while avoiding creating an airof self-righteousness. Student should not bring skepticism to everything theystudy without a profound investigation and research. Exorbitantly skepticismmay exert a negative influence on the personality of students. A student alwaysbrings skepticism to all things and knowledge around may become acerbic andarrogant which make him has a deficiency of communication skills, moral senseand cooperation consciousness. Therefore, exorbitantly questioning what aretaught will breed a counterproductive consequence and has a detrimental effect onstudent's personal development.
Finally, perhaps most importantly ,what thestudents need to improve is the capacity for independent thinking. Theauthentic meaning of independent thinking is not just encourage students tochallenge and question what they learn but rather cultivating their ability tosolve the problems they facing and learning a lot from the process of solvingproblems. Thus ,it is of paramount importance to enhance student's ability tothinking independently so that their minds won't freeze regarding what to bedone when they face a new problem which has no definite and accurate answer inthe future.
From the analysis made above, I concede thatstudents question what they are taught is better that accepting passively. Nevertheless, exorbitantly emphasis on the importance of skepticism may lead to a detrimentaland counterproductive result. In my opinion, the best approach is to cultivatestudents the capacity for independent thinking which is necessary for thestudent’s survival in society.. |
