差点没死过去……第一篇惨不忍睹啊
Issue144
“It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value”
The speaker would prefer the artist instead of the critic as the one who create lasting value to society. I agree insofar as some artists have contributed masterpieces to society. At the same time, however, critics also play a considerable part in society considering their objective speculations and throwing light upon the arts.
An artist can create a work of art which reminds appreciators of the picture in his mind or, more often, the scenes from the nature, thus resonation among people. Since when appreciating a work of art like a painting, the readers can naturally follow the artist's guide through the shade of the color and the emphasis on size of the character the creator depicted, and cultivate their aesthetical mind of art. As a perfect example, when enjoying the masterpiece Tannhauser composed by Franz Liszt one of the representative figures of romanticism, the listeners can imagine a picture of the prelude of the ceremony through the beginning played on the trumpets, and then, aurally sense the dancing partners aligned in the center of a pompous palace. The audiences' feelings of beauty and grace coming from images led by rhythm and melody of the music will sink into their heart throughout their life. This illustrate that the artists can create lasting value through their pieces of art.
However, some artists only cater to the popular trends or for business purpose, creating a large amount of worthless works, from which the masses can not develop good taste but vulgar. Though may be profitable at present time as a way of propaganda for commercial purpose, the works thwart the completeness and wholeness of its artistic expression, thus losing its lasting artistic value.
Without critics’ interpreting their professional commentary of a piece of art, .the public lacking aesthetical views toward art may not accept the artists at all, let alone feel value created by them. Since not all of the common people have a sense of art, they are likely to feel nothing or soporific boredom at first glance of the picture. Yet, society necessitates professional critics in order to lead a proper process of appreciation. No one can independently understand the painting Broadway Boogie-Woogie created by Piet Mondrian, one of the representatives of abstract painting by using only straight horizontal and vertical lines and rectangular forms in simplest color,. Only through the critics’ explanation of the painter’s background and intension can we understand that the painting, which is a culmination of the artist’s aesthetic, reflects the bustling sights and sounds of Manhattan city. Thus, the great abstract painter has been remembered for his abstract work, meanwhile, the public has also remembered the precise commentary attached to the Broadway boogie-woogie. This illustrate that critics, whose put forward expert critique of lasting value, play a important role in the process of public’s accepting and understanding art.
In sum, an artist can not only create something permanent beneficial to society, but also produce vulgar art of no worth. Further more, we cannot deny the fact that learning from critiques can we get a better understanding of art itself and the background. Therefore, both artists and critics play considerable part in our society considering their contributing to the valuable art.
