I agree with the speaker's broad assertion that it is necessary to require the faculty to working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. In my point of view, working in professions relevant to what they teach may help the faculty to make a deep understanding of the courses which in turn helps the students to acquire more knowledge. However, faculty can do a lot to improve the quality of instruction at the college level, for example, to improve their teaching skills.


It is true that when the faculty working outside in the fields they teach, they will be much more familiar with the courses. What is more significant, they gain experience in the professions they study which link them to society so that they can put the theory into practice. For example, as the faculty knows what kind of qualities society requires then they will put much emphasis on how to render the students to be armed with the skills which society calls for. When the knowledge is more closely related to life, students will be more interested in what they are learning , thus, faculty working outside makes the courses practical.


However, spending much time on their work, the faculty may spend less time in making a good preparation for the courses they teach for the reason that a person's strength and energy is limited. Moreover, having relevant occupation may waste a vast of money, for instance, the work astronomers do is to launch a satellite which may cost not only financial but also material forces. Otherwise, the significance of putting some courses into practice is not so much important, such as philosophy and linguistics, they need people to think and research with their wisdom instead of doing work about them. Additionally, there are many professors who are in a high teaching level that they do not need to work outside. Hence, not all the faculty should do some jobs relevant to their courses.


Nevertheless, working outside is not the only means of improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level. For example, faculty can improve their eloquence and add more appealing stories and funny questions in their preparations for the courses. It is their responsibility to make the students find their interests, arouse their interests to explore, to foster their abilities to learn by themselves. When the students are fairly bored with what they are learning, no matter how lively and vividly the teachers describe the courses, the efficiency of learning would still stay rather low. Therefore, the key point of improving instruction levels is to dig out the students' interests.


To sum up, it is a practical way to improve the quality of instruction by requiring the faculty to work outside the academic world. However, spending too much time on the work and neglecting making sufficient preparation for teaching may go against the original purpose of the advice. Finally, students are the priority to be taken into consideration.
