TOPIC: ARGUMENT169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.
"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

According to this argument, the author claims that if the Pierce University offers the professors' spouses jobs, the professors would be more likely to accept their offers for that Bronston College's studies shows professors are happier living where their spouses are also employed. It seems plausible but actually the reasoning are not logistic at all and the evidence are not convictive.
To beginning with, the studies conducted by Bronston College has never given much more evidences which can show the facility and reliability of the studies. People who attended in the studies might be not typical. We also have no idea about the number of people that were asked. More evidences should be given to proved that the studies could represent all, at least most of, the professors.
Even if the studies given by Bronston College are credible and reliable, there's still difference between Pierce University and Bronston College. The two schools are in different towns, the environment of the towns might be different from each other. It is entirely possible that the professors prefer the surrounding of the Bronston College, and they enjoy something its town owned. And it is also probable that the Bronston College provide some other benefits to the professors which the argument has not mentioned yet. Thus, it might be because of some other reasons that made the professors being happier living in the small towns but not the only reason their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area; and the two towns have their own differences.
Moreover, the argument has an assumption that the first and only reason that the professors accept a school is whether their spouses are in the town or not. The professors might care of the university's situations more; or they might care about the climate much; or they might choose on the students. It is completely possible that some of the professors care not a little about their spouses. In addition, some of the professors might not marry or they don't want to live in the town. Therefore, there's no evidence shows that the spouses' job would influence the professors' choice.
Besides, the money the Pierce University spent might be useless. The professors' spouses might don't like the jobs they offered and the climates, the surrounding, the services, or the people in town all might influent their choice. If the money was spent on improve the qualities of teaching, the researches, the facilities of university, the Pierce University might be more likely to be accept.
To sum up, even thought the Bronston College have some professors who care about their spouses' job place, the most important thing to Pierce university would never be that. Pierce University should pay more attention on their capital construction so that the professors might be more likely to join them. |
