TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 526 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2011/2/14 16:19:24
******************************************************************************
The author claims that any means taken to attain a worthy goal is justifiable. I am wholehearted against to this assertion according to my observation to the world. I shall illustrate my point of view below.
To begin with, by which stander do we judge whether a goal is worthy? Is a goal that could bring profits to a company or a goal that makes a person millionaire? Under the situation that chasing goals for money, profits, and advantages merely for individuals or a small group of people, of course, not any methods is acceptable. Nevertheless, when it comes to the case that some goals for the majority in a country or on this planet. We should really speculate whether any means could be taken.
When individuals or small groups seeking for achievements, wealthy and success, those means which is disobey with the law and moral standers are definitely unacceptable. For instance, hundreds of years ago, when merchants went to Africa seek for opportunities. They kidnapped, cheated, threatened black people and sold them to be slaves in America. In this case, the means that these merchants taken to reach for wealthy is not morally correct and should not be allowed since their methods constrained others' freedom, ruined others' future and even taken others' lives. Another solid argument is that during industrial revolution, factories were crazy about profits and paid no attention to the pollution which came out as a by-product. After several years, the environment is drastically damaged and people's health, also, are harmed. Under this occasion, those means that do harm to either the nature or people are unjustifiable.
However, when people work hard without violate any laws or moral standers and do no harm to others and the environment, any methods are considered justifiable. For instance, in the fierce competitions in business world, companies use whatever could bring profits. The same thing happens in people's careers, if one works hard without violating any rules we mentioned before, then no matter how many books he/she borrows from libraries or how long he/she spends in studying is justifiable.
Furthermore, when the goal is for the profits of the majority, should we accept any means that could reach the consequences? World war II, as an example, is for the entire human's freedom and peace. But when it comes to kill a Germany soldier who was forced to go to the battle field, do we still believe any way is suitable? Or when we think about two atom bombs were throwing down to two cities which were full of innocent people, do we still hold the faith that we were fight for humanity, peace and freedom? The answer is no, even if we fight for the majority, we still cannot violate the basic human rights of those whose numbers are fewer. Thereby, not any means are suitable under this circumstance.
In sum, no matter the goals are for the profits of few or the majority, not any means could be taken. Only those do no harm to others, the environment and also not disobey with the laws and moral standers could be claimed as justifiable methods.
