Argument 51
题目:
The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep somepatients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis hasnow been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr.Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibioticsregularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average,40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, allbeing treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their averagerecuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients whoare diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as partof their treatment."

In this argument, the author recommends that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of their treatment. This recommendation is based on a hypothesis, which is proved by the results of a study. This argument seems plausible at first glance, however, several logical flaws can be found after careful examination.

First of all, the author did not provide sufficient information about the study. There may be some other factors which should be ruled out first before the conclusion is made. For example, the age, gender, and health condition may be different in the two groups. Assuming that the patients in the first group are all elders while patients in the second group are all young patients in good physical condition before muscle strain,we may probably get the conclusion that the reason why the recuperation time is shorter in the first group is because the young patients have better immunity than elder patients. Furthermore, the first group is treated by Dr.Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine;the second group is treated by Dr.Alton, a general physician. Maybe Dr.Alton is not good at the muscle strain treatment while Dr.Newland may provide more useful information to help the patients recover, such as the diet, some exercises and so on. In addition, the severity of the injury is not presented. It is completely possible that the muscle strain suffered in the first group is generally less severe than that in the second group. If the author ruled out all these factors first in the study, the results may be more convincing.

Even if the statistics in the study is sufficient and believable, the author should not simply advise that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics. The assumption behind the suggestion is that all patients with muscle strain will suffer secondary infections; however, this assumption is not supported in theargument. In common sense, some less severer strains may not cause such infections.

Finally, the suggestion itself is not realistic and feasible. Some patients may allergic to the antibiotics, or the side-effect of the antibiotics makes some patients far away from such drugs. So, whether there is a need to take antibiotics for patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should be considered more carefully.

Argument 7
题目:The following appeared in a letter to the editor ofthe Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for AnnGreen, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for FrankBraun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members arenot protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number offactories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, andthe local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratoryillnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview willcertainly be solved."

In this argument, the author concludes that the residents of Clearview shouldvote for Ann Green rather than Frank Braun in the next mayoral. This conclusion is based on an assumption that FrankBraun is not supporting the environment protection. This argument seems plausible at first glance, however, some logic flaws are found after careful consideration.

First of all, evidences presented are not enough to prove the assumption that theClearview town council is not protecting the environment. The fact that the number of factories doubled does not definitely cause the air pollution. It is possible that most of the new factories are green factory, which means that they are pollution-free factories. The increase of the air pollution levels may be caused by the autos, and increase of patients with respiratory illnesses may be due to the great weather changes, not the increase of the air pollution. These examples failed to indicate the author's assumption.

Even if the Clearview town council is not doing well in the environment protection, the author could not assert that any member of it is the same as the council. It is completely possible that Frank Braun is really an environment protector, but his job on environment is not presented well to the public.

The author also presumes that the attitude on environment is the only criterion for the mayoral election. Even if FrankBraun is not good at environment protection, he may be a good mayor candidate for any other reasons. He may be a charming leader having the ability to communicate with the ordinary people. He may be good at promoting the local economic development. Both of the abilities are very important for a prospective mayor.

Finally, Ann Green, as a member of an environment organization Good Earth Coalition, probably supports the environment protection. However, a mayor who supports the environment protection does not guarantee that the environmental problems in Clearviewwill certainly be solved. For example, the budget in Clearview is not enough topromote an environmental protection project.

In sum, before a more careful and thorough consideration on the two candidate for mayoral election, the author can not conclude that Ann Green is a better choice.
