147. Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them. The speaker agrees that tradition and modernization are incompatible. It has merit from a normative standpoint, and I agree insofar as there are a number of differences between tradition and modernization, including culture, arts, painting, etc. However, the assertion is indefensible, in my opinion, tradition and modernization have mixed together perfectly so that all kinds of our today behaviors are inflected by them, which we are actually unaware of that. Otherwise, the development of society might defeat its own purposes in the long term. Truely, the speaker's assertion that tradition and modernization are incompatible is partly convincing, for two reasons. Firstly, there is more and more traditional culture, which is not helpful and meaningful for human beings no longer, having fallen into disuse. For a typical example, with the development of technology, traditional paper letters are increasingly replaced by modern communication equipment, such as mobile phone, computer, satellite, etc. Secondly, some kinds of old and outdated perception which forbid our creative thought and hinder the advancement of society are broken, because forward-looking view and creative thought are required by a modern social development. Of course, tradition and modernization are not incompatible in major part. Although people who live in modern society use various advanced tools to help accomplishing a mass of works, human beings do not always get rid of traditional culture. In fact, such numerous excellent cultural traditions, including the Chinese festival, Christmas and other meaningful festivals, have been received by us and affected us.
We inherit the traditional culture and develop it, which have the traditional culture adapt to modernization lives, so that we might improve our lives' condition and push the progress of society towards direction we expect. In addition, tradition and modernization are not opposite. Tradition theory and principle are used as a standard for modern research, which accelerate the pace of science research and arts development. What is more important, historical tradition culture and modern technology both make a contribution to the development of our city. For instance, that the old historic buildings are survived in the cities evolution is deserved for the buildings will become the symbol of a city culture in the future. Clearly through this example of protecting the historic building can one illustrate the significance of tradition culture to someone who wants to know the history and culture of this city. In the final analysis, I concede insofar that tradition and modernization are incompatible, but it is very likely for us to reserve the advantages of tradition and to wipe out the shortcomings of it. In a word, unifying the contradiction between tradition and modernization can express the well-being, harmony and prosper of a society. |
