ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

History textbooks are filled up with the influential individual, while history little notes ordinary people's daily life, even though groups of ordinary people contribute lots to the history. However, this phenomenon has its merit in showing what the past looks like effectively.

No one can deny the great contributions made by countless unnoted normal people.
No significant even can be made only by the rare famous figures. Without tens of thousand slaves in ancient Egypt, we can have the Great Pyramids as a world's wonder; without millions of brave soldiers in the U.S. independence war, the America continent might still be part of the Great Britain; without numerous labors since the industry revolution, we cannot have this colorful world as it is today.

However, the some certain elites, like politician leaders, scientists, artists or writers, have made the determining influents which significantly changed the trends of the time. Such historical celebrities have the talents, powers of knowledge that most people do not have, thus made the innovations or reforms leading groups of people endeavored to change the world. The large group of people just followed them, supported some physical or slightly intellectual labor that everyone has. For example, George Washington, with a belief of liberty, great talent in leading a war, supported with millions of American settlers, defeated British army and established the United States. His accomplishment makes most of other people at that time, looks dim. Another example is the British scientist Newton, who invented calculus as a mathematical tool, and by using it discovered the laws of motion, which founded the base of modern physics.

The most important reason for the history little noting groups of people is that the impossibility to record each individuals in the past. Billions of people have crossed the stage of history, no one can write them down all. And regarding the similar smaller impacts the ordinary individual did, there is no necessary to record what the normal individual did. Instead, the famous figures, rare in quantitative, but being more representative or more influential, deserve the historians to take them as example to show us the history. This way can minimize the efforts taking by historians of while not losing its reality.

Actually, historians do have taken efforts in presenting the ordinary public as a whole. Since the beginning of 20th century, a branch of historians used the material they can find such as the volumes of records in the court, the temporary news papers and someone's dairy, started to convey the whole picture of the public life in a certain time.

To sum up, the famous individuals contributed more significantly then most ordinary ones, and it is impossible to note all the figures of the past. By showing what the elites accomplished, and the overall social status of past, we can have a vivid picture of history.
